Following the hype of the blu-rays coming out, along with the influx of Hobbit info, I've began to wonder exactly where I hold LotR compared to Star Wars. Ever since my childhood (when LotR was just books~) Star Wars has been this unshakable example of movie perfection, but honestly I think LotR might possibly be on the same level, if not better. >_> I'm pretty much talking strictly movies here. If we bring in books and such, LotR annihilates Star Wars. There never has been nor will there ever be a better example of world building.
Star Wars easily. I enjoy LotR, but I never read the books. The movies are good, but I haven't watched them much because they're soooo long, and I don't have the patience for it. And I can't watch the theatrical versions because then I'm missing out on stuff.
This is too easy for me though, because Star Wars is literally my life. I'm nothing without it.

I honestly can't choose one over the other, I love them both equally, and they cover two different genres so I don't really need to pick one or the other. If I want fantasy, I go with LotR, if I want Sci-Fi, I go with Star Wars.

Star Wars. That said, I can't stand all my SW friends who diss the hell out of LotR. LotR is still amazing and "Return of the King" remains in my top ten.

I think more of LotR but I'd sooner watch Star Wars if one of the movies popped up on TV - I really need to be in a deliberate frame of mind to get into Middle Earth.

Star Wars definitely, but only episodes 4-6, none of that 1-3 stuff....bluh.
Also it's kind of upsetting that they added the new guy who played Anikan as the ghost in the 6th movie in the newer editions of it. Leave LOTR to the books.
In terms of the objective quality of the respective movies and novels, I prefer LotR. In terms of the actual impact on the entertainment industry as a whole, and the influence of the 'expanded universes' of both series, I prefer Star Wars.

I will say that Star Wars has this on LotR without question. LotR has a LOT of absolutely amazing lines and some fantastic dialogue, but pretty much nothing can match the raw quotability of Star Wars.
LotR. Used to be a Star Wars fan but movie-wise I don't care for it anymore. Love all three of the LotR movies.
I'm not sure about the "LotR annihilates Star Wars book-wise" statement - The Thrawn Trilogy has a great reputation. Still want to read those books someday.
Ehh...neither is really worth writing home about. I suppose Star Wars because it did enjoy it, rather than having it get on my nerves. (It's much less obvious that "There's only one girl in space." in that I didn't notice until it was pointed out to me).

Star Wars. Even if the prequels are flawed (though Episode III made up for all the waiting).
I like LOTR, but all movies are overly long, and my opinion is somewhat tainted by overpraising. And besides, the books are really, really boring (which is why I wait anxiously for The Hobbit, which unlike the Ring trilogy, is fun to read!).
