Can't recall the last time (if ever) that a video game has taken me on such a fantastic journey, be it in storytelling, emotional impact, or anything. The very moment you suspect that this game can't possibly be more amazing it swings at you with something new and utterly crushes you. Put simply, I'm blown away that this game isn't loved universally, and I'd honestly feel better if I could get even one more person to play it.
Shake before NG+: (8:50:49 PM) Xiahou Shake: that game was pure magic~
Shake after NG+: (2:46:16 AM) Xiahou Shake: yeah this was (2:46:23 AM) Xiahou Shake: really, REALLY, REALLY fantastic (2:46:34 AM) Xiahou Shake: like, I can't even fathom the fact that this isn't universally loved
Yeah, I played through NieR a few weeks ago and got all the endings. Really an incredible game. Totally agree that you need to play at least the B Ending to get a fuller understanding of it. Though once you're there, no reason not to then keep going and see the C and D endings (Well, it's a bit easy for me to say that since I did practically everything on my first playthrough, I think I just needed to pick up one weapon on the first NG+ that I had missed), I mean, it's so easy to rush through the NG+ that's there's not much reason not to see the other endings.

I got Ending B a little while back. I can see why people like it. The plot's great, unique and tragic. Music is fantastic...boss fights are generally cool...but still! Like I said, liked it, but I wouldn't be gushing over the game like some people do. It just doesn't resonate with me as well as it does with some.
I guess what is is that while the game does depth extremely well, the surface element to it is just sort of average. The "ugly puppy" was a lot more accurate than I thought it would be! Still very much worth playing and didn't deserve the panning it got
Right now I'm doing some sidequests and backtracking to get the last few weapons I need for the final endings.

I thought the gameplay was actually the driving force behind the game. It's so unlike everything else in how it combines and mixes all those ideas together. Characters and story were great, too, though. Nier the best.
Bosses and voice acting was excellent, story was alright, nothing too amazing but definitely engaging and surprising.
But for me, the music carried the game, which is why it's kinda sad that there are so few tracks (they never get old, but still).
You should definitely read Grimoire Nier though... it's ****ing hilarious how ridiculous the backstory to everything is.The timeline is my favorite, it's hard to imagine people actually sat down and seriously came up with that stuff.

Been hearing a lot of good things and this will probably be the next game I pick up after I beat a few I'm working on now. Been meaning to start a RPG.

It was cool to find out how Nier became a book and stuff, but I can't help but feel some of that would have been better suited to actually appear in the game. Even if just as a prose section. I mean those things must have cost, what, a tenner?
Also awesome to find out how Kaine likes to jerk off after she kills shades. That...probably shouldn't have been in the game though...

I do very much like their premise for a sequel, though.
A few years after the ending, aliens come. It's going to get rather crowded with gestalts, replicants and aliens....but no, they won't save the replicants with their technology. The scenario is sort of like Independence Day. And then, gestalts and replicants will finally work together
I think what struck me about it was it was a Japanese RPG that DIDN"T center around an androgynous teenage boy...well, in the 360 version anyway. That said, Jameson Price did a fantastic job as the father. I knew he would when I heard his voice, but still.

I do like father Nier much more than brother Nier, from what I know about the latter, but I think they should have just gone with father Nier for all versions. As awesome as father Nier is, Kaine being the love interest is a bit creepy, when you consider that she's only five years older than his daughter at the end of the game and Nier is in his fourties.
That, or made Kaine older in the Gestalt versions.

and as much of a downer the ending really is, Nier was probably perfectly fine with the outcome. It'd be pretty in-character for him to (literally) put his daughter above the entire world.

I don't think it's a big deal because you can play the entire game without realizing there's any sort of love interest anywhere.

The actual combat is pretty plain and lackluster. The bosses were pretty good early on, but they started getting repetitive.
