Unless there's truth to the rumor of Hiroyuki Itou's team handling FFXV in secrecy (which is indeed what they should be doing after this PR disaster) then I'm thinking this could well happen.

It would certainly be better in the long run, as opposed to having FFXIII, FFXIII-2, and Versus XIII all out there.

I wouldn't be surprised if SE is banking on FFXIII-2's sales and reception levels in order to gauge whether or not to do this. And perhaps Nomura can't show as much as he'd like of Versus because there are huge storyline elements that will shift from one thing to the other depending on if the game remains "Versus XIII" or distances itself from the 'XIII' brand and becomes Final Fantasy XV.

I think part of the reason it isn't already "FFXV" is that it's a departure, in some ways, from a typical numbered entry. I think there was some interview with Nomura way back where he talked about how the fact that it wasn't a main entry gave him more creative room to work with or something. They could still rename it something other than Versus XIII -- they did with Agito XIII to Type-0 -- but who knows if they will.

At this point I'll be happy if they release the game in the next two years. They already have the XIII engine, I can't imagine they would make a new engine for Versus. But this is SE, I don't think their employees knows what to do everyday at work.
