One note, if you have a EA game on the PC you can use your product code to have DD on EAs platform. My dvd drive is busted on my laptop so like when I wanted to play Dragon Age again...I just had to plug in my DVD key to get it again.

curious: why do you guys think EA can't have third parties on its service?

I would never trust EA with DD. Isn't it like $300 for Tiger Woods and all the DLC?

I don't think one person here has mentioned GamersGate.

Which is weird, because they're the closest thing to a challenge for Steam right now. They gained steam (no pun etc.) by releasing some of the same games as Steam, except without DRM that came with the Steam release, which also means you can play them offline with no hassle. So they've gained a growing market without having games pulled from Steam (not that they could get that, but that's not the point). They also do the whole ridiculously priced sales thing.

You know Steam is good when you have so many people getting DRM-free things like the humble indie bundle and running them on Steam anyways, with all the inherent Steam DRM.

That's what so many game developers just don't understand when it comes to piracy nowadays. You don't solve piracy with DRM, you solve it by providing a superior service to the pirates copy. You can pirate Steam games, but you don't get the instant updates, the stats, the social networking, the servers, all that great stuff from Steam.

I think in this day and age, Steam might be more significant than anything else as the ONLY example of good anti-piracy.

Steam is kind of like the often pondered benevolent dictatorship.
Sure, he's the only guy in town, and nobody's ever going to dethrone him, but do you really care when he showers the city in cupcakes twice a day and kisses all his citizens goodnight each evening?
Valve's definitely earned the deathgrip they have on the market, and I'd never wish for anyone to take it from them.

EA's not the only one. Microsoft has been trying for ages with their whole games for windows bit. to the point where it has exclusive DLC even, away from Steam and its sales. made for a funny scenario when Bioshock 2 went on sale because you'd actually pay as much for each piece of DLC as the game itself.
