Haha, there is. Go into the UserSettings file (it's in the My Games folder in My Documents for me), scroll down to "SkipIntroVideo" and change the value to = 1. You'll get a black screen for a few seconds whenever it starts up, but it's quicker than WELCOME BACK MY SON. Worst intro.

You can skip the intro as soon as the game is done loading - which is exactly how long you'll still have to wait after turning it off, except now you have to look at a black screen instead.

As for the game itself though: Is it still as bad compared to III and IV as it was when it launched?

Civ V today and Civ V at launch are two different games. It's not as good as Civ IV, but it's worlds better than Civ III.

Civ III had those arguments between your advisors and the leaders' attire changed to reflect the times. I don't remember much else about it anymore but that was cool.

Civ III with Rhye's of Civilization was pretty good! Civ IV is still superior.

And modded Civ IV is even better.

Civ III had like chemical waste or something that would cover your land and your workers would have to go clean it up at a new place every turn. Global warming always struck in the modern era also. bad business all around.

IIRC Civ IV only had huge global warming problems when Ghandi went nuclear.

I liked those random events in Civ IV -- global warming, tsunamis, volcanoes. I know they said they took them out because people complained about being randomly punished for no reason, but I thought they added something without being overbearing. Also liked pollution and health / happiness being on a per city basis.

Rhye's and Fall of Civilization (see what he did there?) is a mod. But I don't really know where to begin describing what it does, because it does everything.

Rhye's is a mod that basically aims for greater historical accuracy. Civs rise and fall based on the year they began or were conquered, the map is much more detailed with region-specific resources, events that occurred in history happen in the game (Civ IV, for example, had the plague spread across the world, and affect the health of your cities; World War II begins in 1939), each Civ has unique goals to accomplish by a certain time (China building the Great Wall). You can change things that happened in history, too, so it doesn't have to necessarily always play out the same. Best mod for Civ.

Civ IV has Rhye's, too!

I like III's Rhye's more. They're really completely different styles of mod. Civ III's Rhye's was an overhaul of the tech tree and general rebalances to different things (e.g. making Settlers more expensive and increasing penalties for total number of cities to make it so the best strategy wasn't just spamming Settlers early game). It made things more realistic, yes, but the general game premise was the same.

Civ IV's Rhye's is really a completely different story with how dramatically it alters the game. Not saying it's bad -- because it's an incredible piece of work. It's just different from how it was before, and I prefer how it was before!

Civ IV has other great mods that do what I'm looking for anyway. Rise of Mankind is getting an update soon, which I'm really looking forward to. Very impressive mod.
