Shark Week has been around forever and I can remember people talking about it back in the early 90's... Facebook wasn't around, but people have always been excited for it.

Ah, then I guess I appreciate it more now than if it were just some hipster thing. I just didn't know that people cared so much about sharks. I mean they're pretty cool but it seems like a weeks worth of shows about them would get old.

I don't care either, and I agree that the hype is kind of odd. Back when Discovery Channel was better I was even a little disappointed because there's nothing but sharks and I just don't care that much, but I haven't watched Discovery Channel for anything but Mythbusters in years.

That's definitely not true. I remember back in middle school and highschool, people used to get super pumped about Shark Week, and hell, there were even people would even jokingly mock how popular it was.
