Yeah... I don't quite get this, either. The only way I'd buy games mostly new is if I'd played everything in my collection and can't wait for new ones. Is this really the case for so many people?

I only buy games new when I know they're really good, like Witcher 2 earlier this year and Human Revolution in 3 weeks. My backlog is so huge I can buy my games mostly from Steam sales and never run out of stuff to play. If only I had the same patience for games I used to...

It's easy to buy games new when someone else buys them for you.

But...you're not actually buying the game!

At any rate, my policy on this works like this: If it is a game I have been looking forward to for some time, I'll get it new, especially if it has multiplayer, and especially if my friends are also getting it. But that is not always the case; I procrastinated on Left 4 Dead 2 for a year.

In all honesty, the only game I bought on release since 2008 has been Portal 2. Mainly because me and a friend got a discount on it. It's $10 less on Steam now than what I paid, but honestly, it was worth it because I didn't miss out on all the jokes and I didn't get spoiled on anything. Except for my friend who decided he couldn't wait long enough for me to be able to play co-op and then walked me through half of it. But still!

I would be legitimately pissed off if I did something like pay $60 for Bioshock 2, and then see it on Steam a year and a half later for $5. This is why I wait for sales on most games. Except Portal 2, of course, although I got a pre-order + bundle discount, so I didn't pay full price for that anyway!

I didn't vote, because it's a huge "depends" for me. There's several games I KNOW that I want immediately, so I get them on the day they're released. Rarely do I actually pre-order, but for some games, like Arkham City, having some really nice pre-order bonuses, I have to do just that.

Otherwise, I'll wait for reviews and what people say about the game.

If I'm not too invested, I'll wait until the price drops, but usually if it's a game I was already looking forward to, it'll be within the first week or two.

I buy games new from Amazon because I have a lot of disposable income and I like playing videogames.

I buy games from Amazon when they're under $30 if it's not a game I had to have on day one.

I buy games from Amazon when they're under $20 if I heard good things about the game but didn't really want to pay full price.

Besides backlog and price, one main reason I wait awhile to buy new games is so that the gaming community can develop detailed guides and post them to GameFAQs.

The first time through a game I always go blind, but I always immediately replay it with a guide to see everything I missed.

honestly tons of games have good deals from day one

like amazon is always selling games with $20 credit if you preorder it

so you dont really need to wait to get a good price usually

Only games I buy new are games I'm actively looking forward to, so so far this year... AC:B and Portal 2. Any other game that warrants looking at, I can wait a few weeks/months. It'll still be good then.

I pre-order games that I'm looking forward to and have nice bonuses for doing so. So far I have Dead Island, Sonic Generations, Gears of War 3 and Rage pre-ordered. I mostly pre-order stuff online, because they have a nice habit of posting it out so I get it a day early. Which is nice.

If I'm not looking forward to it or I don't think it's worth full price I'll either buy it when it gets cheaper or rent it, if I think I can finish it in one go.

What I've been doing recently as well, is buying the games new, completing them as much as I want, then trading them in to get money off the next new game. Sure, I paid £40 for the first one, but then I'm only playing £10-15 for each additional one.

Generally I don't buy many games soon after release like that, but sometimes circumstances make me get new games on release. For instance, last year I played through Super Mario Galaxy a few months before its sequel was released, and I played through Metroid Fusion and Metroid Prime a few months before Other M was released, so in both cases I thought "yeah, I want to go big on these franchises in the next few months, might as well get their newer games too". I hope that the same will happen next year with me and Metal Gear Solid: Rising.

I guess back in the day when I was a kid my parents would buy me games asap if I was good/wanted them. But nowadays sans like 2-3 major titles a year I agree, I save my money and wait for a price drop or get them used.

it's logical, far more important things to spend money on.

Waiting till something goes on sale is fine, but if you buy something used when there's a new copy available you're an awful person.

what if the condition, after u view it, is 100% legit and fine and you're paying 5-10 less dollars? the heck is wrong with that. If you're a gamer then multiply that by 10 games and you're talking a couple cell phone payments

$5-10 is a pittance. If you can afford to drop $50-55 on a game you can probably afford to pay full price and actually support the developer.

Uh... And why is that? Because you wanna save some money?

Edit: Oh, you mean Gamestop... Well, if you do that, you're just not very smart because you pay much more than what the game is really worth used (use ebay, etc. instead).

you can ebay, amazon, gamestop, buy from a buddy, etc. There's a myriad of ways to save money. and a pittance here/there is fine to me, whatever extra I save helps me save more money. Then I can afford to splurge and not feel guilty (on omre important things)

I can't think of anything better or more important to spend my millions on than supporting my favorite developers by buying their games full price.

Sure I'm not going to play Catherine anytime in the next few weeks, but you better believe I bought it last week to support Atlus.

I wouldn't buy a DVD or CD-based game used unless I had to (or unless it was an amazing deal). I want the least amount of wear and tear possible on those formats.

Any game on cartridge or Blu-ray, then sure, give me used if it's cheaper, as long as it comes in the original box. Blu-rays are much harder to damage.

I tend to buy games I want... when I want them, I guess. Sometimes it's a few weeks down the line, sometimes I hear it getting praise a year later. When Christmas was a factor, I could always wait for games until then, but these days I just buy them when I feel like it. Price isn't really a factor, it's a bonus at best.

And the only times I buy used is off the shelf at a Gamestop when the game's well old enough or if I make a conscious decision not to support the developer. (I'm buying UMvC3 used as soon as possible, for example)
