Having put it off long enough, you begin your walk towards Alameda. You’re not sure what to expect from it, but you know it’s probably worth investigating either way. You walk down the street cautiously, towards the lit up sky; towards the man-made island of Alameda.

The smoke is thick in this area, obscuring your view slightly. The main road to Alameda is all but abandoned. Thankfully, it’s a straight shot all the way there and you don’t have to wander around aimlessly. You begin to wonder about what you’re going to do when you get there. You really have no idea where to start. You grew up there, but your memory is weak. You don’t remember much since waking up, but maybe the sight of the place would jog your memory.

From behind you you hear a voice. “Hey puto, what chu doing out here?” You turn around quickly. It’s one of the shady guys from the train. An hispanic guy in a brown coat, wearing a New Oakland Raiders beanie. “You’re in the wrong hood, esse. We can help you though, man.” We?

Just then, you hear another voice, from behind you. “Yeah mang, our help ain’t free though.” The voice says, as the other shady man emerges from behind a building. Through the smokey air, this guy looks bigger than the first one, but it could be your imagination. A goatee encompasses his mouth, framing his words as he speaks. “What’s in that bag you got there?” You’re surrounded, and still a good ways from Alameda. You can just make out the towers of the short bridge over the estuary that connects to the island.

“My boy asked you a question man.” the first man says to you from behind. You turn to speak just as he shoves you to the ground. He pulls out a knife, but holds it at his side. “Hand over the bag, mother****er.”

A) Give the men the bag.
B) Open the bag and grab the gun.
C) Try to make the run to Alameda.
D) Press the button.

“You deaf or something? Gimme that ****.” The man with the knife seems to be getting angrier. Down on the ground, you have no leverage over him, but you aren’t about to give up your stuff to these lowlifes.

“Okay okay, here.” You stand up, slowly, formulating your plan. “There’s nothing in here though, it’s just my books for school. Look.” You reach your hand in and pull out the handgun. The two guys take a step back as you alternate your aim back and forth between them. The two men stand in silence, saying nothing. The only sound is that of a small fire, crackling and popping across the street from you. Its light the only thing illuminating the buildings around you.

One of them finally speaks up. "Oh ho, look what we have here. The little ***** has a weapon. You even know how to use that thing, gringo?" They look at each other, anxiously, waiting to see what you’re going to do next. The guy in the brown coat grips his knife harder, his knuckles turning white.

A) Threaten them and tell them to get lost.
B) Try to rob them.
C) Kill them.

“He’s just a p****, he ain’t gonna do ****.” The man with the knife steps towards you. You aim down and pull the trigger. The bullet hits the thug in the foot. You’re startled by the sound of your own shot, but not startled enough to lose focus. You immediately put the gun back at arms length, ready to fire another shot, your hands shaking slightly.

“You ****ing shot me!” The wounded man yells.

“Still think I don’t know how to use it? Now leave me alone.” You point the gun at his face.

“You messed up man, you messed up bad.” says the man with the goatee, helping his friend up onto his shoulder. “This ain’t over. Come on Eddie, let’s go.”

You keep the gun pointed at the men as they limp away down the dark and gloomy street. You don’t move until you finally see them fade away into the smokey blackness. In the distance, you see the lights of a BART train arriving at the Fruitvale station. It looks to be more than half a mile away. You lower your gun and put it back in your bag. You’re more than halfway, so there’s no point in turning around now. You continue towards Alameda.


After 5 more minutes of walking through the smokey wasteland, the gates to Alameda are finally within reach. As you get closer, you notice that the lit sky you saw from a distance wasn’t the sky at all. It was a large dome, lit from the inside, surrounding the entire island. “What in the world...”

As you continue to get closer, you see the lights of the gate. Heavily armed guards litter the entrance, which looks more like a military base then an entrance. “Whatever is in there, it must be important.” you think to yourself. The bridge across the estuary that separates the island from the mainland is heavily guarded with men on both sides. The railroad bridge, long since abandoned, stands tall right next to it. Up in the towers of the bridge you can barely make out figures on platforms. You assume them to be snipers, and you aren’t wrong.

Maybe approaching directly isn’t the best idea. You think about possibly trying to sneak past, but that could be just as dangerous. Maybe you should find another entrance, but who knows how long that would take, and you don’t exactly want to be out here anymore.

A) Look for another entrance.
B) Approach directly.
C) Try to sneak past.
D) Head back to the Fruitvale BART station.

Your fear gets the best of you, and you decide to look for an alternate entrance, rather than risking your life at the whim of soldiers and snipers.

You duck behind a crumbling wall and use the safety of darkness to scope out the areas on either side of the bridge. To the left, the island begins to curve slightly, barely out of sight. To the right, the island and dome stretch on further than you can see. The thick air obscures your view in both directions. In the end, neither of them look more intriguing than the other. You feel like it’s a 50/50 shot to you whether or not you run into something useful in either direction, but you still aren’t sure if it’s even worth pursuing Alameda further at the moment.

Sitting in the dirt, you realize that whatever you do, it just means you have to spend more time wandering around in Fruitvale.

A) Go right along the water.
B) Go left along the water.
C) Return to the Fruitvale BART station.
D) Press the button.
