Jason Aaron keeps my hopes alive for another good X-men team book besides Uncanny X-Force.

http://www.comicbookresources.com/?page=article&id=34070

The first concern is juggling all the various plot elements. You want all the different characters to have their own stories, their own beats, but you want it all to intertwine as well. That’s more a challenge of mechanics, of advance outlining, though it’s one that will only grow more complicated as time goes on. The first big challenge for me upfront has been in defining 14 separate characters. Putting meat on their bones, so to speak. Making them substantial, beyond just an individual costume or power set. Crafting for each of them an original perspective and a voice that’s clearly distinguishable from one another.

In a good team book, you can recognize the characters just by dialogue. If someone was reading to you from an issue of Claremont and Byrne’s “X-Men” or Grant Morrison’s “JLA” or Rick Remender’s “Uncanny X-Force,” you’d know which character was speaking without having to see them. Because the characters are so carefully defined and unique from one another, their voices are easily discernible.

Very true, and I love all those books.

Now compare that to a badly written team book. I won’t name names, but I’m sure you can find one. The characters tend to blur together. They speak with the same voice. While they may sometimes fight about things, their perspectives aren’t always discernible. They’re not substantial enough to stand apart. They’re built on fluff, not bedrock.

external image

Written by SCOTT LOBDELL

Art by R.B. SILVA and ROB LEAN

Cover by ERIC CANETE

When N.O.W.H.E.R.E. assigned Superboy to put down an alien prison riot, they couldn’t have suspected his powers would bring the entire prison down on top of him. Inside the wreckage, he’ll find a mysterious – and gorgeous – alien who could help him escape… but does she want to? Meanwhile, Superboy’s handler, Rose Wilson, is about to discover that she is connected to the origin of her “assignment” in a way she never imagined!

And that's Miss Martian on that cover.

Superboy, written by Scott Lobdell with art by RB Silva

http://dcu.blog.dccomics.com/new-52-superboy/

Description: Superboy, Conner Kent, has always been a bit of an odd case in the DCU. He's a tank born clone created using the genes of Lex Luthor and Superman, originally appearing as a possible replacement for Superman after his supposed "death" 15 years ago. Since then he's had a very lengthy and mildly successful ongoing, a primary character slot on the old Young Justice team and the following Teen Titans ongoing, and has even suffered a death in Infinite Crisis followed by a very convoluted rebirth. It seems as if he's going to receive and entirely new origin story for this relaunch, of which only the smallest details are known so far. But he's still going to have his place on the Titans, and is receiving a brand new ongoing.

Creative Team: Scott Lobdell is a veteran Marvel writer who really hasn't done a ton of work on non-team books. But from the looks of things, Superboy is going to have a fairly extensive supporting cast of other heroes as well, such as Miss Martian and Ravager, so honestly this may as well be a team book anyways. So there's a good amount of hope for his work here yet. Another note to make is that Lobdell has stated that 3 issues in he hasn't included a single narrative passage yet, something former readers of his work would note he tends to include an excess of.

RB Silva has had only one art job to date, drawing the back-up (short story) feature in 3 issues of Action Comics. And it looked damn good. He has a similar look to Sami Basri, a bit more flat and cartoony, but not to any detriment of its quality.

external image
external image
external image
external image
external image
external image

Ease of Access: Superboy looks like it's going to be changing things around a lot from his past, and it seems like his origin is going to be retold and altered anyways.

Recommendation: From a personal perspective I take a little issue with this. In recent years, Superboy has returned to Smallville and has been going in a more rural direction, being his own man and dealing with much smaller and more local problems. The last 2 books he's been involved when have been some of the best comics DC has put out in years. But it looks like all that's being scrapped and Conner is going back to throwing punches and jokes. It's a fairly big disappointment for a fan of the characters recent arc. Does that mean that this new series is going to be bad? No. In fact, I'd strongly recommend it if you plan on reading Teen Titans, since they'll probably tie-in pretty closely. As a standalone, though, there are more potentially better options, but I wouldn't throw it under the bus.

Demon Knights, written by Paul Cornell with art by Diogenes Neves and Oclair Albert
http://dcu.blog.dccomics.com/new-52-demon-knights/

Description: Demon Knights is a title that is going to place during the Dark Ages of the DCNU, where a team of seven supernatural knights battle against forces of impending doom. Essentially, a “super team” book in the time of knights and magic, or in the creator’s own words, “Swords and Sorcery and Superheroes”. But just because it takes place hundreds of years in the past doesn’t mean there won’t be any familiar faces. The leader of the team looks to be the rhyming Demon Etrigan, and he’ll be joined by such characters as the immortal Vandal Savage and the mystic Madame Xanadu. But along with the “old” characters, we can expect to see original characters created to take advantage of the unique setting. With a diverse set of characters, a unique and interesting setting, and plenty of action, Demon Knights looks to be a fairly straightforward swords and sorcery ser- ARE THOSE ****ING DINOSAURS?
external image
THOSE ARE ****ING DINOSAURS

The Creative Team: For DC recently, he’s done a run on Action Comics that starred Lex Luthor going around the DCU being the bastard that he is. It was nothing short of spectacular. He also wrote a well-received miniseries called Knight & Squire that was a take on London’s versions of Batman & Robin. It was also good, if almost incomprehensively British. He’s good with characterization and he’s got a sense of humor, too. He’s also done some work on Marvel’s British superheroes. So yeah, Cornell is pretty great at what he does.

Neves is the penciller, and he’s done a bit of work for Marvel on X-Men and New Mutants and for DC on Green Arrow. He also looks like he approves of some fanservice here and there. Albert is the inker, and the most notable thing he’s done is the inking for Blackest Night. They aren’t really big names, but their art looks pretty solid. The preview art for the series looks great. Combine the art with a great writer and you’ve got a recipe for success.

Ease of Entry: Like I said, it takes place hundreds of years before what’s “currently” going on in the DCU. While some long-standing DC characters like Vandal Savage will be appearing, they most likely aren’t going to be bogged down by tons of history. It might be a little daunting to see a big cast with not a lot of explanation of who each one is, but it should be mitigated by the fresh new takes on the characters the setting allows. Should be fairly straightforward.

Recommendation: Absolutely if you are a fan of high fantasy or want to see something other than modern-day supershenanigans. And even if you’re not, give it a shot. In all honesty, it’ll probably need as much support as it can get, and this is one of the most unique concepts to come out of the relaunch.

Let me put this another way, if you don’t think Marvel isn’t watching closely how this unfolds for DC, watching how successful or unsuccessful this approach, this relaunch, will be– then you aren’t thinking.

If it succeeds in a big way for DC, if it wrests the market share from Marvel, Marvel will very, very likely follow suit– maybe not this year, maybe not the next– but they’ll look at what worked in DC’s big relaunch, what didn’t, and try to top it.

Can't argue with that.

I've thought the same thing several times already and it's part of the reason I kind hope this relaunch is a bit of a flop.

Well, I haven't. I stop following them once everybody and their momma had a different explanation for it being a reboot, or a relaunch, or some of Batman stuff happen, but this character doesn't exist, and blah blah blah.

It would be even worse for Marvel, who has never had a big ass reboot like this. Its one thing to s*** on 25 odd years like DC, its another thing entirely to do it to 50. Not to mention the Ultimate Universe being more irrelevant then ever. I have little interest in rehashing the same song and dance in the vain hope of attracting people who don't give a damn about this industry. Continuity isn't the issue, at least not the main issue. You can relaunch as much as you want, but if you still charge $3.99 for 20 pages of content, you still do stupid ass stories, you still use an archaic form of publication like Diamond's direct market, you still can't advertise your comics worth a damn, you still can't get them into venues normal people would actually walk in, you still have crappy digital distribution that doesn't put things in trades or discounts on prices, you still do gratatious Geoff Johns fetish limb-cutting and bloodbaths that scare parents, and you still keep around the same f***s like JT Krul and Tony Danial that caused a decline in the first place, then it really doesn't matter. Same s***, different day.

I could seriously see myself dropping pretty much all of Marvel's books if they pull some s*** like that.
