I get too many CD's piling up in my car and want to get an iPod. I might as well put my whole library on it, which isn't all that big now but I plan to expand. Would 32GB be enough, you think?

32 gig could get you to like 2000 songs easy.

Isn't the general rule 1GB = 500 songs? I used to have a 4GB iPod nano and I'm pretty sure it had like 2000 songs on it.

depends on how much music you have, semi-obviously. I have a 30 GB and I've got it not even halfway full despite the fact that I have bags full of cds at my house.

so i'd guess 32 is fine for you.

So if an average album is about 12 songs that's 167 albums....probably more than enough for me.

No way, my average song is 7mb, 500x7mb = 3.5k mb -> 3.5 gig.

Oh. Do you guys have like, really long songs or something? I mean, the average song is between 2 and 4 minutes. But I know some people with video game music or classical music or whatever have super long songs. Also I probably don't know what I'm talking about.

My average song is 4 minutes long, not a single video game song, nor instrumental song.

Also when I extract songs from my CDs I try to get the best quality possible.

If you store them as MP3s already, just rightclick->properties on the folder where you store them. Otherwise just start encoding them now

Quality of the audio files can make a huge difference on size.

But basically what neon said - just go ahead and rip your CDs and then check their size on your computer, and see what size you need.

I have 3434 songs that total 8.57GB, but that might be a little lower than normal because many years ago when I ripped most of my CDs, I did it at 96kbps so I could fit more songs on the 64MB player I had at the time. The reduced sound quality also made everything sound more like how I was used to hearing it: on endlessly redubbed blank tapes.

Also most of the songs I have are shorter, I think the average length is under 3 minutes.

My iPhone can barely hold a quarter of my music and it sucks. I have almost 9,000 songs, which is a little over 61 gigs. I've been waiting for the i5 for so long. Gotta upgrade the storage space

My 4 Gig can hold just under 900 songs. Was enough for me at the time but I need a space for more like 1200-1500 now
