Hey I totally agree that votals on Gamespot have the potential to be higher. I just don't see the point in spending all this money if they're not even going to try to do that..
Anyways, WCC probably has this. Or maybe that Mass Effect guy. I'm not familiar with the series, so I don't know anything about him. I think that Luigi and Yoshi are probably the most popular indirectly (Mario is popular everywhere and Mario and Bowser didn't look any weaker on Gamespot when compared to here, IIRC), but WCC can probably rally past them.
The only way I see it losing is if:
A) A joke character manages to edge it out, but then fails against the much stronger Mario crew B) WCC has a cakewalk to the finals. Freeman and Kerrigan built up momentum to their rallies with earlier close matches, IIRC.

All they would need to do is like replace that "Gamespot on Youtube" thing with the poll match, and the hits would skyrocket.
If they did that, they would only be able to fit one match in that spot. That might be a good idea if they ran one match at a time, but they don't do that. They like to run multiple matches at the same time.

I just sent a suggestion to GameSpot telling them to host their contest on the homepage. I used their customer support forms to send them a suggestion. I didn't post my suggestion on the forum, because they moderate stuff that normally wouldn't be moderated on GameFAQs and I wasn't going to risk a moderation there.

I expect another trainwreck of a contest, though this one may feature the least amount of rallying...if only because 4chan doesn't actively have somebody to hate against in the tournament. What mega-popular character do they have to hate on here, Captain Price for being from CoD? Really, what mega-popular characters are even in this contest? Luigi and Yoshi are the closest to that category, and I still don't think that would be worth their time. Throw in that the bottom sixteen characters of this vote-in are being dropped from the bracket, and we have that much less of a random nobody for them to rally behind under the premise of it being funny.
WCC/Alyx may have a chance of shaking things up if they reach the Final Four since Gordon got Steam-support two years ago, but that doesn't necessarily mean much. Gordon's the lead character for the series that put Valve on the map, and that was for GameSpot's first contest about the biggest hero. Alyx is a significantly smaller part of the series, WCC is still just in basically two levels across two games, GameSpot's run two butchered contests in a row, and the title of the contest isn't nearly as important-sounding. We also saw Valve won't defend one of their characters just because they're losing, either; GLaDOS lost in the second round of the Villain-contest to Vader (one of the under-appreciated travesties of GameSpot-contests) and Dr. Breen lost to a 4chan-supported General RAAM in the Elite Eight.
Between that and a lack of Blizzard-characters, I don't think outside forces will ruin the contest. GameSpot can do that by themselves this time.

In a contest about video game villains, does Vader's game appearances even compare to GLaDOS's? He ended up winning 60-40 due to his rich movie history, not because of video games. That's a travesty on-par (if not worse) with how Master Chief and Sephiroth were screwed in past contests.
You support the idea of adding other fictional characters though, so we're not gonna see eye-to-eye on this.

Right, and I'm all for unrelated polls about these other guys as well. Let the winner of such a poll(s?) face Link afterward for fun, too. Just don't dilute the reason the contests were ever cool to begin with: celebrating video games. I don't care to share that focus for two months at a time with other characters popular for completely unrelated reasons.

I encourage alternative reasons why these contests are cool then. GameFAQs was the only spot to ever put that kind of focus on what people prefer within the industry in such a way for the people to directly decide on it, and they've done it better than anybody else for nearly ten years.
We've also seen GameSpot implement the change you're looking for in a variety of ways, ranging from fictional characters to real athletes which were featured in at least one game. Would you say you've become a bigger fan of GameSpot's contests because they implemented that rule? Because the people happy with it based on their forums were few and far between. That's despite Vader's and Joker's success in the tournament, too; they reacted similarly to L-Block's run in 2007 here.

This is the schedule that GameSpot has planned out for their contest:
Round 1 - 5 days Round 2 - 4 days Round 3 - 3 days Round 4 - 2 days Round 5 - 2 days Round 6 - 3 days
Contest starts on September 7th and ends on September 26th. Overall, I'd say GameSpot is trying to improve themselves here. The final round is just 3 days instead of 6 days in last year's contest or 7 days in their 2009 contest. GameSpot really needs to be more consistent with the length of each round. Like making each round last for 3 days, for example.

HaRRicH, GameFAQs' contests are cool because they get a prominent spot on the site, not because it's exclusive to characters who originated in video games. After all, the 2002 contest had a non-video game character in it. He even won a match and finished in the top half of the (holy lol this contest is weak) X-stats!
Right, and this is a video game site. Submit a poll to IMDB.com about movie characters. If GameFAQs has a bonus-poll or or PotD that connects them together, cool -- I too would like to see Link face Batman once -- but that's it.
You must also be talking about Strider, who's at least mainly known as a video game character. We also haven't seen him since nominations opened, and I think SB once responded to a feedback ticket saying he won't return to another contest.
I don't think a consensus was ever reached about how to handle religious characters in such a premise, either. If the premise ever happens here, my interest will immediately go to whether or not God is allowed.
I can continue to argue, but it's tiresome and we know our stances too well. My ultimate enjoyment from the contests comes from seeing how the gaming demographic changes each year when it comes to their favorites in the medium, and video games are THE unifying factor among us all. Close matches, one-on-one, comebacks, newcomers...all of that is fantastic, but it's been fantastic to me because I enjoy the video game fanbases the most.

I highly doubt religious figures would be allowed, just for controversy's sake.
From: HaRRicH | #074 and video games are THE unifying factor among us all.
Right, but we don't all enjoy the same kinds of video games. I assume most everybody else here enjoys movies, music, and various forms of television media, but we don't all enjoy the same kinds of those things. It's not like nobody here cares about movies, and so having movie characters in a contest is a bad idea.
Garrus is doing really well now - moved into third place just ahead of Cube and Tails, trailing only Luigi and Yoshi. If it weren't for the Valve characters in this contest, I'd very likely take Garrus to win.

The other reason an all fictional character contest would be cool on gamefaqs is it's because it's the same community that's voting.
I don't want an imdb contest, I don't know what they're like. I wanna see and predict what gamefaqs thinks about movie and tv show characters against video game characters.
TsunamiXXVIII posted... Well, we're being given a chance to vote for 64 characters right now to make the bracket...out of a total of 80 options. So yeah...I guess I really should only vote for my favorites to improve their chances of getting in, but then what if the field ends up with...oh, I don't know.
I doubt anyone actually takes all 64 though. I voted for like 20
I only used up 37 votes out of the 64 votes that they allow you to use. That's mostly because I don't recognize like half of characters that GameSpot has chosen for their contest.
-- Luster Soldier --- ~Shield Bearer~ | ~Data Analyst~ Popular at school, but not as cool as BlAcK TuRtLe, Guru Champ!
They give you a GameSpot Emblem for using all 64 votes. I don't think this is well advertised, though. If it was, they would pollute the results of their own poll with users voting for tons of characters they know nothing about.
