Columns of magically formed mithril rose and formed a grate between me and my attacker. I quickly rounded the corner and crouched underneath a low overhang, trying to catch my breath. "What a waste of energy, if you would only come along quietly I wouldn't have to cast this many spells and you get to rest forever right here. There are already coffins here anyway! No one would have to pay for your funeral either."

Xanthos of Immortal Blazes walked slowly. After all, no one could escape that particular spell, thought to have been lost for hundreds of years and finally, finally his for the taking after years of intensive research into the Voidarts. And besides, he always allowed himself a small break after completing a job.

He wondered why he, in particular, was needed for this job. Clerics are usually so pathetic that even most normal, run-of-the-mill mercenaries could destroy them with little effort, and he was the best of the best. Of course, he never saw nor knew about his client or his motives, and who would he be if he passed up easy money and easy prey? Dead, that's what.

Still though, this... Irene of Silver Weaves has managed to block or dodge most of his weaker spells, and for that show of defiance he credits the girl with a modicum of competence.

He saw the girl's charred corpse, collapsed within temple altars. Pity, he thought, maybe if she had reached it in time, there might have been something to challenge me, but after all, she is a mere... cleric.

He entered the altar and crouched by the corpse and started to cast the spell of identification.

"Well well well, look who we have here."

A feminine voice coldly reverberated around the chamber.

"I didn't expect seeing that spell again quite so soon. I knew that you barely passed the laughable standard the scum today label as 'competent', but bravo, I commend you for your efforts."

"Who are you? What do you want?" He tilted his head, trying to locate the direction the voice was coming from.

"I am called many names, most of them lost to time. However you know me by the name 'Irene'."

He glanced back at the corpse, and saw that it had transformed into a small doll. He cursed and backed off from it.

"Tut tut tut. Dogs like you never learn to think. Anyone ordering a cleric killed wouldn't hire a firebrand like you. You were fairly expensive too, nearly emptied my purse you did, but no matter. Any mutt foolish enough to come here also carried his bone with him...."

He heard footsteps coming from behind him. He turned around and saw a figure wearing a black, wide rimmed hat.

"Why would you do this?"

A laugh.

"One day, long ago, a young cleric decided that she didn't want to die. She searched and searched for a method everywhere in the world. And finally she found one. By offering up a single mage sacrifice, you can extend your life for centuries..."

The man threw a ball of raging fire at the figure, it dissipated before reaching halfway.

"And, now that we are the temple's magic suppression chamber... I can finally use my full power..."

She raised both her hands, hexagonal symbols, divine hieroglyphics, distorted whisperings of beings from beyond the void spread throughout the chamber.

Xanthos turned and ran for the exit.

A cackle. "Do you really think I would leave room for you to run away squealing? Think again, mutt."

The spell coalesced, crackling, ripping, tearing, destroying the very fabric of reality as it gathered in the cleric's arms.

"Well, you kept me entertained for long enough. Goodbye."
