The gist of it: living uninterrupted in a residence for a certain amount of time can legally make you the owner of said residence.

Yup.

The purpose of the law is so that you can't be removed from your home because some long lost descendant of the original owner comes around and claims his rights.

But what it means is that if someone has exclusive use of the land without permission for an extended period of time(read - if someone is illegally tresspassing over a long period) and is not removed, they gain ownership.
