I was tempted to make this topic, but there seemed to be an unwritten rule of only one homestuck topic at a time >_>;;

But yeah, best time to jump in. Very unique experience and imo makes other forms of media feel a bit...lacking in comparison.

I was uninterested in Homestuck the first time I read the first 25 pages or so too, but then at someone's suggestion I tried it again and the story picks up immensely after you get through like, the first half of the first act.

25-50 pages of Homestuck takes you like, 15 minutes to read. It has a slow start and isn't for everyone but really.

I disliked it at first too. Then I just decided to use autosave. If that ever messed up, I would try and remember a phrase or what section of the story i was in and use the search.

Bit more of a beast to do with homestuck as it is a bajillion times longer than problem sleuth was (like...3x as long page wise....longer with all the flash and pesterchum logs)

I got to a certain point in PS and just stopped (homestuck had just started). Picked it back up a year or so later and shot right into homestuck....

I regretted nothing. <3

Yeah, you want to read until at least the "Walt Whitman" quote before deciding anything. The first act is by FAR the worst and everything afterward is incredible. I'd say that quote is when things give you some hope for the future, and it gets truly going a little after the first combat sequence, without spoiling anything.

I like the first act too, actually - one of my biggest complaints about the direction Homestuck has taken lately is that it sort of forgot the adventure game aesthetic. When's the last time anyone captchalogued anything? But the first act did take a while to grow on me. Like, the first fifty pages or so are just kind of weird, but once you commit to reading it it gets really fun pretty fast. I started liking Homestuck even before it was clear what the plot was.

Yeah, I had also read Problem Sleuth so I didn't mind all the messing around in Act 1, but I can see how people would not care for it.

I'd tell people to at least read until End of Act 2 before they decide that they don't like it. I don't think that's particularly unreasonable; that's like telling someone to read 1/4 of the story before they decide it sucks. <_< To me, that's when I first got a sense of how "big" the story of Homestuck is. Act 2 having tons of Dave Strider didn't hurt, either.

The first part of Homestuck is ridiculously stupid and it tones that down a lot as it goes. It took me 4 attempts to get past the beginning and I'm glad I did.

It still has a few stupid **** moments here and there (MAYOR OF CANVILLE and the like) but it got pretty damn awesome after it did pick up enough to interest me.

Not QUITE caught up but I only have 300 pages or so left.

You just failed really hard at remembering stuff. MAYOR OF CANVILLE becomes a lot more significant later on. Go forward to EOA 4 (I think that's the point) and watch what the guy who engages in that does and what happens to him. You can thank me later.

And oh yeah, you're thinking of Rise Up, which is just before EOA4.

Some characters are pretty well characterized for having no dialogue.

Woo, thanks!

Speaking of Homestuck, it's surprising nobody else has remarked on the complete awesomeness of its soundtrack. It's huuuuge, and goes from very classic chiptune stuff to real instruments playing some pretty haunting pieces, and mixes of both. Here's an example of a track derived from, but not used in the comic, so it's a safe one:

(don't click any link that doesn't use the same image or you'll spoil yourself. Homestuck doesn't quite have the same level of MUSICAL SPOILERS as Umineko, dumb as that idea is, but there's no point in not getting the full effect of hearing the tunes for the first time on their own [S] flashes)

EDIT: Also, DO NOT READ THE COMMENTS. The first few are fine but after the video response you might spoil yourself on the plot and we don't want that to happen. Just open the tab and enjoy the music IMO.

OK, that's probably a bit far. Let's not discuss later events of any importance here. No point in introducing people to Homestuck only to spoil the hell out of them!

Done. Lol me for not noticing. X_x

And yeah, Homestuck's soundtrack is just incredible. I'm actually working on setting up a web original work myself, and I know the one thing I'd absolutely kill for (beyond a billion fans of course) would be a composer for it. Music conveys so much stuff words and even images can't, it's unreal.

Not so much the name as the association between the character and saying that you don't like that character. In a work as high-quality as Homestuck there really aren't bad characters in the usual sense of bad writing, so it could tip someone off. The sole exception is THAT character, who was intentionally written to fracture the fanbase (though still pretty awesome at the end, not so much at first)

The only time I really like him is when he's interacting with... uh... argh, character names are spoilers now? When he's talking to 69. (you figure it out.) Their conversations are entertaining.

John's totally the best main character IMO. His best moments are all very humane, instead of just being funny or whatever, but that's fine - he's easily the most likable main due to how it's easy to empathize with him, JUST like it should be with a main character.

And now I have to do rankings, bah.

EB>TG>=TT>>GG

TG easily the funniest (his counter-trolling on you-know-who is still my favorite moment, so good), TT is pretty great still, and GG is kinda meh and too undeveloped to like as much.

Jade has some cool moments, but she doesn't have the hilarity of Dave, the coolness (or awesome themes) of Rose, or the general quality of John (John reenacting his favorite scene, best ever). I think it's for the best too. Had she been more prominent before she'd have eaten the story up, what with having such a huge leg-up on the others.
