Don't have too much to say on the matter, so I'll just post the best thing to ever emerge from Japanese politics.

the good news is that ichiro ozawa didn't produce the winning prime minister so they won't have to be a lapdog to him for the next year - but he will probably cause problems like he did for the former pm! japanese politics -- true disaster.

since naoto kan resigned only a couple of days ago, the voting was just among the active democratic party of japan members, which number at about 395.

Uhhh

Jeeze

Why are the PMs changing at such an accelerated rate? Has Japan been dealing with a major crisis (besides the natural disasters) as of late?

japan's leadership has been a revolving door since koizumi left. basically, someone ends up elected with high public support, but it eventually ends up falling considerably (kan was at 15% when he resigned) due to a number of different issues. with kan, it was the mishandling of the nuclear disaster; with hatoyama before him, it was about going back on what he promised when the dpj came into power -- a big issue was the u.s. okinawa bases, which he promised to have moved out of the area but then went back on that promise after the u.s. was unwilling to budge on the issue, and he drew that out for months. and then he was involved in a funding scandal that kinda killed his popularity with the public.

the important things to know: http://online.wsj.com/article/SB10001424053111904199404576537571252107278.html

* His biggest strength, he maintained, was the kind of persistency that kept him showing up every weekday morning for 24 years at train stations to talk to commuters in his suburban district near Tokyo.

* "With me in the office with these looks, I don't expect our approval rating to skyrocket," he said in a speech before Monday's vote by his party's lawmakers. "I'll never be a goldfish in a scarlet robe, but like a loach in muddy waters, I'll work hard for the people, to move politics forward," Mr. Noda said, referring to an eel-like fish often found in Japanese rice paddies.

* Below the surface, Mr. Noda has a highly competitive streak. He is a husky martial-arts buff with a black-belt in judo, and expert knowledge in pro-wrestling.

will he lift the Tokyo manga ban

Didn't this have like absolutely no effect?
Seems like more stuff is being published lately that's in violation of the act than there was before.

I mean as far as I know nothing is being sold in Tokyo, but it's still available everywhere else.

this tokyo manga ban appears to be some law banning "harmful manga"

I have yet to locate a reputable news source about it though.

It's not really a "manga ban" so much as it was an act that illegalized anime/manga that could be considered "harmful" to society. Stuff like lolis, sympathetic villains/thiefs (Lupin the 3rd), panty shots, etc. were to be banned from production in Tokyo. (Tokyo being where a large, large chunk of anime/manga is produced.)
Thing is, the law passed AND went in to effect and we've seen absolutely zero change, so either every production company in Japan found a loophole, or nobody cares at all about the law. Either way, anime/manga's going as strong as ever, perhaps even more so. >_>

Maybe the manga ban just didn't ban all that much and people over here overreacted like they always do.
