Melee's a better game objectively, but Brawl gets my vote due to nostalgia. I know that sounds odd, since Melee's the older game; but many of my favorite gaming-related memories are from playing Brawl with friends for hours on end, as well as the Dojo. I just can't vote against it.

I remember me and my brother would make 64 man tournaments filled with 3 of our characters each and a bunch of bots. We'd do that all the time. Then Brawl came out, we played it a bit and then... Eh.

I play Brawl more often, I'd say. It has some advantages, especially on the single-player front. While Melee has one of the best fighting game event modes of all time (It's pretty neck-and-neck with MK9 for me), you can't even use C-stick in 1-player and it's a huge pain to unlock everything. In Brawl, you pretty much just run through SSE and then do a bit more grinding for stages. Random CD drops are bad but that doesn't affect gameplay in the same way as characters and stages. Brawl also has the stage creator, online play, and mods. Melee is worth coming back to now and then for the balance differences and exclusive stages. It's certainly not obsolete. Neither is SSB64.

Brawl Melee is an artifact and should be treated with respect for what it is, but it's obsolete, mainly due to how it's impossible to get the game nowadays.

I know I've said this rather often, but Brawl easily has the superior character cast - and I'd imagine that that's the most important component of a fighting game. Unfortunately, Brawl falls flat almost everywhere else, especially the core gameplay.
The main thing is that Melee feels more action-packed and vibrant, plus I don't necessarily care for my games having gobs of content. I like all three.
They feel exactly the same to me and I am sick to death of both of them. However I did at one point enjoy Melee, it only became drudgery after I had played it extensively. Brawl on the other hand was pure tedium from the get-go. Also Brawl's mixed reaction gave it an opportunity to torpedo the series for good which would have been the only positive thing it could have accomplished, but it failed to do so, which is another strike against it.
I'm one of the few people who likes 64 more than both.
I say Brawl, although its close. Its mainly due to the massive soundtrack and inclusion of some great characters (Dedede, Ike, Sonic) in the latter title. Plus I like the Brawl version of Bowser way more than the Melee version. Melee has Mewtwo, a better Ganondorf, better events and faster, better gameplay, plus combos.

Well, unless you live in Singapore, Australia, New Zealand, U.S.A., Canada, Japan, Taiwan, or Europe, I guess. Try coming to Indonesia, Kiribati, or South Sudan and find a copy of the game.
I love Brawl, though I haven't played Melee in forever. I think the character list, trophies and SSE are all great. The issues people complain also about don't hinder my ability to enjoy the game.
I played Melee more than almost any other game but I have to vote Brawl just for having a better cast and being more fun to play casually with friends.
