I noticed you start out playing as Yoshi, but does anyone know how or when you can play as Mario?

I'm pretty sure it occurs rather soon indeed. I've never played though so I do not speak from experience, only distant recollection of the statements others around me have made.

I don't think it takes too long before you unlock the other three characters

you can play as Mario when you realize what a horrible game SM64 DS is and play the N64/VC version instead

So dumb they make you start as Yoshi.

Yoshi should be something you work to play as, not work to stop playing as!
