no offense dude but your post spends way too much time bashing sm64. And to be honest, just about all of your criticism of SM64 is easily applicable to mario galaxy.
Mario 64 may be overrated, but nowhere near the level of mario galaxy 1/2 is on b8. Some people here legitimately think its the best game of all time, or at least top 10. Its nowhere near that. Mario Galaxy 1/2 doesnt have close to the replay value of mario 64, so I'm not sure where this "mario 64 doesnt age well" crap is coming from. Unless you are talking graphically, which then I'm just gonna say people who think high end graphics are the best part of gaming are overrated.
as for individual worlds, out of all the worlds in mario galaxy 1/2, few are on the level of
Shifting Sand Land Cool Cool Mountain Lethal Lava Land Rainbow Ride Tick-Tock Clock Dire Dire Docks Wet Dry World
Deep Shell Well and A Strolling Down Rolling Lane are the only two from galaxy 2 id put on the list. Melty Molten Galaxy also belongs as a top tier level, from mario galaxy 1

FF7 easy. Oot is close, but at least I still really like Oot.
I want to know how many people attacking pokemon rby actually played it before any other version. Sure It's not good now, but holy crap it was amazing then. same with portal when it first came out. Obviously a comedy game isn't funny if you know the jokes before hand.
Played MGS for the first time in 2008 and I thought it was excellent, don't understand the aging argument

My main criticism comes from the people who say it's better than Galaxy because Mario 64 is "so much more open ended and less linear."
I don't really have a problem with linear games, but the idea that Mario 64 is an open-ended game is silly because it's not. You can have a linear game that isn't on rails.
Mario Galaxy 1/2 doesnt have close to the replay value of mario 64, so I'm not sure where this "mario 64 doesnt age well" crap is coming from.
Their replay values are fairly similar, considering you do the same thing in both games (Do a bunch of platforming while collecting 120 stars). Just depends on which one you find more enjoyable.

Shifting Sand Land is one of the worst levels in any Mario game, including Sunshine. The only thing Dire, Dire Docks has going for it is the music, which is admittedly excellent. It's literally just two areas, 90% of which is water. The rest of those are fine (although you'll have many people who will argue vehemently that Wet-Dry World sucks). I'm not saying Mario Galaxy doesn't have some lackluster areas, because it does, but overall, it's better designed with better platforming and better overall gameplay. It has better individual stars by and large than Mario 64 does, too.

Well, it won't work, because I'm proud to be weird!
(I only feel that this might have been a reference to me even though I had yet to post in this topic at the time because LMS mentioned both SA games and your response only mentioned SA2, and I've mentioned many times that SA1 is my least favorite of the four sixth-gen console Sonic games.)

No, you're not the only weirdo on this board who thinks SA2 is the best Sonic game.
Haven't met anyone who thinks SA1 is the best Sonic game yet, so I didn't mention it.
I'm not sure if I even do think SA2 is the best one. It's my favorite due to the nostalgia factor, but I think I decided that some of the others were objectively better.
Also LOL STP.

I honestly did like exploring a lot in Mario 64 and I do not understand where Leon's complaint is coming from.
However, Galaxy by far has better opening levels. I'd say that Mario 64 does not regain that advantage until the last few levels, if it does at all, that is. Also Mario Galaxy feels more "Mario" to me.
While I'm tempted to say those the correct answer is probably Portal, given praise beyond its station for such a simple loosely explored idea.
If we're speaking strictly critics, GTA4 took the cake. It still baffles me how so many reviewers would have you believe that was the greatest game ever made based on their scores.

I hope this isn't sarcastic, because (depending on the day), I agree with this.

But god damn. Talking to some people, you'd think the game was the best RPG ever made. Wasn't even the best game in its own series at the time it came out.

FFVII isn't my favorite game in the series either, but I honestly don't have any problem with people thinking this because I can see why they do.

Well in my case it's difficult to see why considering I've only played 2 games worse than it and didn't really like much of anything in it. It's not a case of it being ok, good, or being indifferent to it.
The more I think about it, the more I want to put both No More Heroes above even SotC. If those games were on PS3 or 360 they'd get completely lost in the shuffle. They're not really "good games" so much as they're "good Wii games." Hell, they'd be better games if they were nice little 5 hour games where all you did was fight the bosses. Everything else is an absolute bore,
From: LeonhartFour | #128 I hope this is sarcastic.
SMS gets a lot of unwarranted flack, IMO. I thought the stage designs, in general, were good, and the Shines fun to get.
In general I think SM64 is the best 3D Mario platformer (Note: I haven't played SMG2), but I think I had the most fun playing through SMS.

No, the flack Sunshine gets is mostly warranted. There are some good things there, but there's a lot more bad there than you usually get in a mainline Mario game.

I can't see why they do. Not even a little.
Well I mean I have my own idea about why they think it's the best ever, but it mostly revolves around things like nostalgia for their first RPG and groupthink.
-- Ace Detective in Sir Chris' Police http://img2.imageshack.us/img2/5299/jackiekungfu1.gif
Even by today's standards, FFVII has an impressive atmosphere with a compelling story and a strong cast of characters who are likable in their own ways. The cast has great chemistry together. The pacing of the game is excellent, especially on disc 1. Something is almost always happening, right from the get go, and you're never doing too much of one or the other at any one time. You're not spending too much time in cutscenes, and you're not spending too much time fighting in dungeons. Materia is fun to use, and the amount of abilities the game throws at you is impressive. It has some great mini-games (and some not-so-great ones, yes). I know this is all highly subjective and somebody like Joyrock will laugh at me for even suggesting such a thing.
Square did a great job with Cloud, too, with the way they let you choose so many things and essentially mold him into the type of character you wanted him to be. I have never understood the people who say that Cloud is a flat character because he's the furthest thing from it.
And while this may fall under "nostalgia" and "groupthink" (although I despise these terms and cringe whenever somebody tries to bring this up for why they don't think popular old games aren't as good as people think, feels like a cop out for not having a real reason why the game is bad or just a lack of trying to see what's good about the game), playing FFVII for the first time, there was nothing like it. It was truly a fresh and unique experience when it came out with the way the game was presented, and that's a large reason why the game is remembered so fondly.
On the site of GameFAQs, I say it's definitely Kingdom Hearts. Sure, the story is great, but you have to play 5 hours of badly designed worlds for every hour of good stuff.
KH2 beat KH1 with 52%, but it should have won by more, so therefore KH1 is more overrated. =p

"Ah, a party! We haven't had one of those. So...what is a party?" "Well, you drink punch and eat CAKE! ...I think."
LeonhartFour, is it okay if I just PM you my response? It was over 5,000 characters by the time I was done, and I couldn't prune it down to less than, like, 4,600. And I just think everyone would be happier if I didn't post it as two posts and assault their eyes with 5,000 characters representing some dude's opinion on a video game that's over a decade old.
