I'm trying to get together parts to build my first PC. I want it to run to run the best games well, like BF3, as well as be able to run 3D modelling programs like SoftImage and Maya. This is what I have so far:

http://pcpartpicker.com/p/14Ln

I think everything should be OK, but I'm not certain which is why I'm asking. If it helps, the monitor I'm planning to use has a max resolution of 1920x1200.

well these guys aren't gonna build it for you, so with that in mind...

http://promotions.newegg.com/neemail/sep-0-2011/labordaysale02/index-landing.html?nm_mc=EMC-IGNEFL090211&cm_mmc=EMC-IGNEFL090211-_-EMC-090211-Index-_-E0-_-All

that sales topic of mine posts the newegg newsletters when they send 'em to me.
for starters, a nicer hard drive in there.

different one that might be more useful for this too:
http://promotions.newegg.com/neemail/sep-0-2011/diy01/index-landing.html?nm_mc=EMC-IGNEFL090111&cm_mmc=EMC-IGNEFL090111-_-EMC-090111-Index-_-E0-_-SeeAll1

bare min, cheaper ram in there.
some more motherboard options too. and they combined get you to ask AMD or Intel. though with AMD's new chip coming out in a few weeks, that future's a bit questionable (and the prices are gonna drop like a rock on older ones).

bump

Oh yeah, I also want to connect this new PC to my wireless network for Internet. Is there anything specific I need/should get, or will any wireless adapter do?

so long as you have a wireless connection in the first place, any will do. that's how i was getting online for a long, long time. a simple $10-$15 USB adapter will do it. might cost you a bit more if you're trying to get on a 5 Ghz instead of a 2.x connection (only matters if you're with a dual band N router).

I guess the only thing I'm wonder is if the parts I picked were OK, like if I'm missing anything or whatever.

oh, that? let's see...

- separate CPU Cooler really isn't necessary for most people. the processor comes with one by default, and neither Intel nor AMD have been skimping on this in the past couple years. so you can save that money.

- the RAM can use an upgrade to something better. that's a fairly generic RAM there by Corsair (which is a good brand mind you), and you can do better. if you want to stick with the same speed:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820231311&nm_mc=EMC-IGNEFL090111&cm_mmc=EMC-IGNEFL090111-_-EMC-090111-Index-_-DesktopMemory-_-20231311-L0C
is both cheaper AND better after the code.
if you want to go a little better (1600mhz instead of 1333mhz), for $5 more there's two Corsair options that are better builds as they've got headspreaders. doubt you'll feel a difference at that speed though honestly, and can't say it's worth the $10 difference between 'em anymore because RAM is dirt cheap.

- the site lied to you as it doesn't account for newegg codes. the hard drive for example:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16822152185&nm_mc=AFC-C8Junction&cm_mmc=AFC-C8Junction-_-Hard%20Drives-_-SAMSUNG-_-22152185&AID=10440897&PID=3938566&SID=
can be gotten for $8 less from newegg.

- i think they're also wrong on the motherboard. clicking the link does not point me to something that cheap. and at the higher price, i think you might be able to find something better.

- the CPU however does look like it can be gotten for 10% lower from the place they picked though. it ain't mentioned, but that's a nice $20 saved.

- case looks fine.

bonus option if you're interested, but that optical drive you picked can have some bargains if you're after 'em.

Power Supply, Motherboard, and vid card are the only 3 parts not checked on a lot. motherboard is wrong in the price you've got there, power supply can maybe use a better one for similar price, and vid card is missing that rebate too, and the extra $30 might be found in better places. i'll check around to see if a few different ones are there.

otherwise it's just a matter of price and time - in 2 months you'll be finding hard drives real cheap, real easy. fully intend to try to bag myself a 3TB drive come November (maybe two). overall, can you find similar parts for less? absolutely. are you comfortable with this though? well it's good, so take that as you will.

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813130573
seems to be the closest thing resembling that motherboard you have listed there, including the rebate. downside is it costs more up front, but considering what you've got selected there costs from the other sites listed too... yeah no, it's not working out. sorry to say here, but you missed that sale. motherboards are frequently on sale though so if you're not needing it asap, it works to wait. at least wait until tomorrow so we get the last labor day sales.

but otherwise, a decent consideration goes to:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813138320
it's has a couple less features and PCI-E slots (MSI boards are great overall at this), but is a lot cheaper up front. up to you there.

power supply is... not $80 as it was listed in your list, but $70 post-shipping cost. so keeping that as the measure, it's a high quality 520 watt PSU.

after rebate however:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817139020
this one runs you the same price and is also pretty much made by Sea Sonic, just with the Corsair label slapped on and some minor tweaks. end result, this one's a flat out better one in all regards. even before rebate it costs $15 more (or $5 more than you intended to buy there), and is probably worth that difference on its own as 520 to 650 watts can make a pretty sizable difference.

also:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817139028
gets you something a bit cheaper even BEFORE the rebate (after the code), and a good amount less afterwards. however the one you listed is not bad by any stretch, did a quick check on johnnyguru and he loved it (like pretty much all sea sonic products). this one is if you want to save some money on a good PSU that's still got some more juice in it.

vid card takes about as much time as these two combined probably, so i'll get around to it later.
it's also the least important one since at least changing a vid card isn't gonna be a complete overhaul.

if you can't get any student deals, this is at least better than what you had listed.

not too long ago it was the full OS, not just the upgrade. no doubt they'll bring that back within the month in some way or another.

and honestly not sure why you're picking that one. again:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817139028

its bigger brother initially costs $10 more. it has a promo code to take off $10, and the last day for that is tomorrow. both have a rebate of $20, and yes you can use the rebate AND the promo code together. basically they're the same price, but one has 100 more watts.
