i've actually had surgery to remove a birthmark on my ribs because it was potentially cancerous. swift and extha have seen the scar if you don't believe me.

i have never heard of somebody's life being threatened by an abnormally large nose however

If it is to correct something that is potentially life threatening, then yes.

If you are in a car accident or a fire and horribly disfigured, then yes.

If you have a slightly larger than average nose and use it to garner sympathy, then no.

It does seem like Mer definitely wants to get the nose job. Wonder why he was asking feedback from B8 users when he'd already made the decision anyway, unless he didn't yet make the decision back then and feedback from other people made him decide that he should get plastic surgery. Not saying he had "bad intentions" or was fishing for compliments, but this seems kinda weird to me.

As far as I recall, he wasn't asking for advice at all. He basically told people, "I'm getting a nose job. Deal with it." I told him that I thought he looked fine, and he said, "Don't care. I'm not doing this for anyone else; I've already decided that I want it."

No, a deviated septum isn't exactly "life-threatening", but it's something that can be fixed to make life easier. If he's going in for that, but wants something done aesthetically while he's under I don't see the huge issue here.

I don't consider myself an alcoholic but I know exactly how society would view me if it could see me when no others can. I have improved my situation. There were times when I would drink every night and every night it would be until I blacked out. If I tried to take a night off from drinking, I would lie in bed for 13-14 hours and get maybe 15 minutes of sleep because the withdrawl symptoms would give me muscle twitches and I would wake up from any one of the following: involuntary neck twitch (which was dangerous considering I've never fully recovered from whiplash several years ago), involuntary kick or flail of an arm into the wall, involuntary teeth clench (often biting my tongue or the inside of my cheek). Sure, nothing serious, but for someone trying to sleep, having that s*** happen constantly for the entire duration of a night that was made longer to get extra sleep that didn't happen? Now I can at least take 1-2 nights off every week and still sleep. It wasn't about looking cool, it was about dealing with a job that had in indescribable level of stress. I have a scar I can't cover up on my hand from when I pressed it against an object that was roughly 500 degrees farenheit for no other reason than to calm myself down because one of my bosses had crossed a line with a coworker that I could not allow and I was about to strike with what would have more than likely been lethal force. I didn't want to attack the guy, but I had too much adrenaline to function. I had known from accidental burns that the burning sensation itself did indeed calm me down, so I made a choice. I've never been a frat boy and I drink hard alcohol, not beer. I usually buy the liter and I finish it in 2-3 nights. I go to different liquor stores (there are several in my area) just so that the same employees don't see me frequently enough to think I have problems. My family doesn't know about my habits, and they won't, because I am too functional and I support myself, and I am good at keeping secrets. You've had family members die from alcohol? Well my family might have that happen to them and if it happens, they might not see it coming. I don't want to do that to them, but to some extent I live in my own world and in that world, I have not had to face my own mortality, so thinking about possible health complications in the future is like staring at an abstract painting I don't understand or trying to read a language with non-English characters... I'd like to think I can continue the "cutting down" process on my own, but progress has been slow. You won't find me on shows like Intervention because I don't have people I depend on that can corner me like that and if I have a reason to stay sober for a certain amount of time, I'll be able to. Never been to the hospital for alcohol poisoning, although by witness accounts back 7-9 years ago, I've had it. Never been arrested for an alcohol-related incident although I've come close several times. No DUIs and there never will be. I don't drive, no licence, no operating a motor vehicle even when sober, so certainly no operating one while drunk.

Anything else you want to know about me that you clearly had no f***ing clue about prior to this wall of text? I don't like to be this transparent but if you're gonna make a bunch of ignorant assumptions about me, you might just be opening a door that won't close behind you...

let's get some things cleared up

1. I have never made a topic on b8 about my surgery, nor have I ever gone out of my way to bring it up in conversation. I talked about it a bit on board8chat several months ago because I talk about most of my personal life in their. I consider most of board8chat my friends. I tell them about school, jobs, relationship, family, etc. etc. It's just general conversation. The surgery is something I consider pretty important, so why wouldn't I tell them? The only reason the board at large even knows was because it came up in certain topics, and users like realo and Ulti felt the need to debate with me for hundreds of pages on why I shouldn't do something that doesn't affect them at all and will only make me happier.

2. I'm not getting the surgery for purely vain reasons, I have a severely deviated septum and inflamed turbinates, and my doctor actually recommended it. Granted, the cosmetic reasons are a huge bonus, because I do hate my nose. And no, it's not "insecurity", I'm completely secure in my dislike for my nose and am 100% certain I want it changed, and I don't think that makes me a shallow or vain person because plenty of people artificially alter their bodies in hundreds of ways every day.

3. I'm legitimately sorry for calling you ugly or whatever in that topic months ago, TimJab. Like, sincerely. That kind of behavior is beneath me. I never insult people for their looks or for things they can't control. Why I'd ever take such an easy shot at you is beyond me, it was a low moment and was quite out of character (especially when your personality, as evidenced by your behavior in this topic, is already a goldmine of terrible qualities).

With that said, I'd like to hope that this whole trend of "every topic Mer posts in becomes a weave snatching fest of haters calling him ugly and simultaneously trying to tell him not to get surgery" because it's become entirely tedious bull****.

I'm getting the surgery.

I'm doing it for myself and myself only.
