This happened, last night.

And purely by coincidence.

He walked fine. He was in a suit though, for the wedding of Shearwater's Kim Burke.

Clearly you were right Tim

Shame, though. This is a much better photo than Mer's.

A number of friends I don't see often enough turned 21 at various points during the summer, the most recent of which was at the end of August. We decided to go out last night, hit the local watering holes, catch up, all that shmoozy business. Around 1130, we headed into this relatively new place - Howling Wolf Taqueria. We knew they had a decent bar, and that it'd be pretty low-key, since it's stationed squarely between the two bars that tend to attract all the awful people you typically meet at bars. People we have no desire to be around.

The five of us sidled up on the right end of the three-sided bar. My friend Matt (the big guy in the photo) and myself on the end of the front of the bar, and our friends Ashley, Mike and Jenna taking up the three seats on the right side of the bar. We order a round of drinks, we talk about people we've seen, people who've disappeared off the face of the earth, or otherwise lost their minds. You know, the typical s*** people talk about when they haven't seen each other in some time.

After a while, maybe half an hour, a well-dressed man in a suit, with a green spotted bowtie walks up to the bar, on the other side of Matt, and asks what time the bar closes. The bartender answers him, and he walks back out. Finding it odd, my gaze, and MIke's, followed him as he crossed the street to a group of people. After a moment, the crowd of them begins to walk toward the building.

"Those people are so well-dressed," Mike comments. "They look so nice. Someone should hold the door for them."

He gets up, heads over to the door, and holds it for maybe a dozen handsomely dressed people. I notice a short man with extremely long hair wearing a derby hat, a gorgeous blonde wearing a red floor-length gown, a cute strawberry blonde wearing a beige dress with a red sash, a number of smartly dressed men in suits. Thinking little of it, I turn back to my beer and my friends. Ashley says they must be a wedding party. I argue that there appears to be neither a groom nor a bride amongst their number, and she agrees, but still thinks it is a wedding party.

I turn over my left shoulder, to look at Matt, and one of the smartly dressed men catches my eye, and I can see that the same guy has caught Matt's attention. We both looked back at each other, then back at the guy, then back at each other

"Is that Ted Leo?" we each ask the other, almost in unision.
"I think that's Ted Leo," Mike says over from over my right shoulder, just as I start saying "That's definitely Ted Leo" to Matt.

We sat there for a moment, kind of stunned - we're in my town, not in Boston. There are no logical reasons for him to be there that we know of. We eventually introduce ourselves, and Mike realizes that the woman in red is Kim Burke, and the man with the derby hat was Thor Harris, both of the band Shearwater, who he saw perform with Wye Oak last winter. I'm pretty sure the redhead was Ted's wife. Turns out Kim was just married at our town's very beautiful and fairly well known Peabody Essex Museum, Ted was a guest, and played at the reception as well. He graciously talked to us for about half an hour. We made jokes about Mitt Romney and Scott Brown, talked about his time living in Massachusetts, some shows we saw him play over the years. We offered to buy him a drink, but he declined, since he had just ordered a Modelo for himself. Before we let him rejoin the wedding party, Mike asked him if he could be "that guy" and take a photo. Ashley, knowing that the three of us were all big fans, offered to take the photo. The photo above is that photo. We showed it to Ted and he chuckled and said said that there were surely worse photos of him online someplace, which may or may not be true.

There was one other attempted photo, where Ted wasn't making such a hilarious pose/face, but Ashley didn't know how to use the camera on Mike's phone so it didn't come out well. I think the one we got is better anyway.

That's awesome Cokes, wish I could remember to take pictures when I meet famous people. Not that I meet that many since I moved from San Diego.
