Reading through this I wanted to debate some of the points Smuffin made. Then some more. By the time I finished there was just too much wrong to go into, so I'm just going to shake my head and leave the topic.

That's not a lie, that's the plain truth, and you don't need to hear it from any socialists to know it for truth. Sarah Palin is unpopular. You can say that the media made her unpopular, but that doesn't change the fact that she is. People don't want someone they perceive as stupid to be president. It has nothing to do with her conservatism, and everything to do with her perceived stupidity.
Sorry, but the anti-Palin stuff just drives me nuts because its SO wrong and is a prime example of the whole "anyone will believe a lie if you repeat it often enough" logic.
I can't just allow it to go unchallenged. That's WHY so many people believe it.

Ahh, you switched tenses on me! She's unpopular NOW (because of the lies and the people like you who spread them), but she wasn't during and before the election. The media hate-machine took a bit of time to successfully destroy and villianze her and her family. They didn't get it done in the few months they had, so they spent the next few years keeping at it because they recognized her as a threat for the future.

SmartMuffin posted... No, you're the one who's missing the point. The economic argument against the death penalty is inherently flawed, because the death penalty IN AND OF ITSELF is not economically disadvantageous. The way we choose to go about it is, but that way could be changed. Texas could change the law and say that as soon as someone is sentenced to death, they pull out a pistol and shoot him in the head that very second. Then it would be MUCH cheaper.
You're right in that the death penalty itself isn't a money sink and that the methods are, but those methods have to be enforced to lessen the moral dilemma of whether or not the people we're putting down are actually guilty or not. I know empathy isn't exactly your thing, but come on.

It's all a conspiracy, guys! Sarah Palin actually has presidential credentials! The socialist/communist media are just hiding them from us!

Okay. But in the interest of honesty, you should then reveal that there are two options. One is to eliminate the death penalty because the appeals process is so costly and we need a lengthy appeals process. However, if your interest was PURELY economic, you would favor my "shoot him in the head" argument. You don't, so obviously your interest is moral. So make the moral argument. It's a legitimate one. But don't hide behind shoddy economics.

She was pretty unpopular by November. In September, she was well-liked, but by the election, she was not. Though granted, she was liked much better back then than now, so she probably didn't lose many votes for McCain (not like the demolition she would receive if she were the Republican nominee this time around). The Republicans had a hopeless election in 2008, the only one of them who could have avoided being branded as Bush 3.0 was Ron Paul.
Smartmuffin, does your salary still come from taxpayer dollars?
Yep. I entered into a contractual agreement, and I work for one of the very few agencies that the federal government is explicitly tasked with providing in the US constitution. I also do my job pretty damn well. You're getting a great value by employing me. You're welcome.

In retrospect, Palin's reveal almost came off as McCain playing his trump card. People were pretty positive about her until she actually put herself out there, family issues, etc.

Yeah, she practically BEGGED the media to harass her teenage daughter, hack into her e-mail account, and mock her child with down's syndrome. What a stupid *****!

I also think the economic argument on the death penalty is stupid. But I think the moral one is really strong; we need a lengthy appeals process to stop the potential horror of being falsely executed. I know I'd rather be murdered by a private citizen than the government.

they never harassed her teenage daughter. they did, however, point out the inconsistency of pushing a "abstinence education is the best sex education" platform while having an unwed pregnant teenage daughter! that's aimed solely at Palin, and to me reads like "how do you reconcile the fact that your platform doesn't match reality at all."

You're using confiscated wealth, socialist.
What would John Galt say?
Why aren't you working in the private sphere, anyhow? No degree?

Also, I think common sense is highly overrated in politicians and I'd far rather take the Ivy League educated candidate over someone who supposedly has common sense. We've elected predominantly people who graduated from elite schools for 200+ years and our country has done pretty well in that time.
nah I'd rather have someone I could have a beer with

They've got to be someone who graduated from an elite school and with whom I could have a beer. Preferably someone who went to elite schools not just anywhere, but in New England. Especially if they went to not one but two elite New England Ivy League schools. Even better if the schools have high endowments, because such schools will teach their students how best to manage finances. And I don't want the person to be too much of an overachiever, so I'd be more comfortable with someone who only got okay grades at these great schools. No need for fancy Rhodes Scholarships to study in England.
But seriously, I want the candidate to be:
1. Smart 2. Have the same vision for America that I do

I'm having a difficult time believing that someone goes from "housewife" to "governor" while being really stupid. What does that say about all the people who she destroyed in elections along the way?
In any case red sox, I know you're being sarcastic, but it sounds like you just described your dream candidate to be GWB!
-- SmartMuffin - Because anything less would be uncivilized http://img.imgcake.com/gadsdenflaggifda.gif
There's no inconsistency between pushing an abstinence only program and having a pregnant teenage daughter. The inconsistency is between promoting good Christian morals and having a pregnant teenage daughter, and it's not a contradiction she could do anything about, just ironic.
The inconsistency is between promoting good Christian morals and having a pregnant teenage daughter
This implies that
a) People who aren't Christians don't care if their teenage daughters get pregnant and b) Only stupid people and hypocrites have children who don't do exactly what they say 100% of the time
-- SmartMuffin - Because anything less would be uncivilized http://img.imgcake.com/gadsdenflaggifda.gif
It doesn't imply either of those things actually. It doesn't matter what non-Christians do, the contrast between the good Christian morals she promotes and the situation in her family is there as long as good Christian morals say having sex out of wedlock is bad. And as I said, there was nothing Sarah Palin could do about it, so it's really just ironic, not hypocrisy or anything like that. Personally I think it was admirable how she didn't pressure her daughter to get an abortion, knowing the damage the child could do to her reputation.
Personally I think it was admirable how she didn't pressure her daughter to get an abortion, knowing the damage the child could do to her reputation.
She also could have easily aborted her baby with Downs and chose not to do that either.
Although I find it hilarious that so many of you are so confused by someone actually doing something they believe in rather than whatever is the most politically expedient!
