Everybody I've met hates at least one, and what makes it more amusing is that they all hate different ones. Every FF game (even VII) has a significant hatedom as well as fandom, it seems.

I played XI back towards the beginning of its reign for a decent bit (my first mmo) and I could never understand how SLOW your character moved. It wasn't until I got my thief to 25 before I felt like my character was moving at a more reasonable pace.
I left XI and started playing other MMOs and it pretty much solidified my original feelings. Why was travel so incredibly difficult in that game?
from what I remember you had to spend an incredibly sum of money to buy an airship pass, get to an incredibly high level to get to the rank where they just gave you one, or just bought a mount every single time you wanted to go anywhere one time per payment, but only if you originated in a main city. Every time you had to go somewhere on foot you were taking your life in your hands and it was like you were running in quick sand the whole time.
that's not even counting the required boat trip to get to one of the main cities whose voyage randomly spawned a group of level 30 skeletons to kick your ass and send you back to where you got on the boat (if you were lucky) so you could wait to pay for the next boat trip and hope you don't get your ass kicked again and lose even more XP
that brings up another point. since when is de-leveling due to an XP cost ever a fair game mechanic? much less when they put you in situations where you're going to die no matter what?

Well, most every FF game is notably different from the others. You might take one at "random," let's say 5, and you can say it's similar to 3 because it has a job system. And, uh, yeah, that job system. And they're both JRPGS. Yeah, that too. And if you compare FFV to anything other than 3, well... They're all JRPGS. Square made a point of making them all quite different to the point that the only thing connecting them is the name and the genre. And maybe some similar but still different mechanics.
In other words, what you've observed makes absolutely perfect sense.

I've been irritated by aspects of all of them, but there hasn't been any that I can say I disliked (out of the ones I've played.) From what little I saw I wasn't keen on 9, so if by law I have to have one to dislike, I'll go with 9, but I really can't say I've legitimately played it, either.
I'm also notoriously forgiving of games for things that drive other players nuts.
1 is amusing because Fighter/Knight is stoopid 9 is meh 2 is bad but not as bad as once thought. Still pretty dumb/bad though. 12 sucks 8 sucks 11 sucks
havent played 13. Will probably hate it.
