It's closer to mediocre than truly awful, but I still wouldn't recommend it.

If you're just looking for PS2 RPGs that you can get for $10 or cheaper at gamestop, Wild Arms 4, BoF: Dragon Quarter, and Dragon Quest 8 are all decent options.

Yeah, I have DQVIII but it's on my irritatingly long list of games I need to get back to. Great fun so far though, absolutely.

I could look into the others.

It is a mediocre game, every other game in the series is better. If you are a fan of the series it is probably worth a try, but if you aren't, it is a gamble.

...though perhaps one who has not experienced the goodness of the other games would appreciate 4 more.

You should look up info on Dragon Quarter first, yeah. It's a love it or hate it game. Better than being ambivalent towards it or hate it like S4, though!

And don't worry about having played/not caring for the earlier game in the Wild Arms series. 4's the only one I really enjoy (although I haven't tried 5 yet)

Play it. I enjoyed it to say the least, weakest entry to the Suikoden series but not the worse RPG out there.

yeah its not TERRIBLE but pretty much every game in the series is better

if you really want to play it it should probably be like your 1st or 2nd Suikoden game (after playing I) to get max enjoyment lol
