Now don't get me wrong, Palpatine was pretty incredibly, and is one of the few entertaining parts of the PT, but I always thought Tarkin was much more interesting.
Tarkin I always felt was a great character, expertly played by Peter Cushing. He represented realistic evil. The kind of evil you see in bureaucracies. The kind of evil you see in governments like Nazi German. Cold. Calculating. Nondiscriminating. And I love that.
Palpatine on the other hand comes off as fairy tale-ish. Not that that is a bad thing. I mean this is a series that is about Space Knights with laser swords using space magic. And I think Ian McDiarmid did a fantastic job portraying the character. But Palpatine seemed more one dimension by comparison

LeonhartFour posted... I don't think Tarkin intimidated or scared Vader or anything.
More like Vader had a respect for the authority of his position.
Vader doesn't strike me as the type of person who'd take crap from anyone, regardless of position. But that said, he took commands from Tarkin like a kid takes candy from a child molestor.

Because he does.
When did Anakin ever show a respect for power in the PT? He humbled himself before Palpatine only because he thought it was the only way to save Padame. Then once he had the suit he continued to follow Palpatine because he really had no choice at that point.
Also, his plan to overthrow the Emperor with Luke really smacks of respect for power, lol.

Except the Emperor basically told Vader to turn Luke to the Dark Side, and that was one way to tempt him to do it.
And Vader does go through a dilemma when he has to choose between obeying the Emperor and saving his son. If he didn't care about Palpatine at all, he'd have no problem just wiping him out to save his son, even for a selfish purpose.
What Anakin does before becoming Vader really has no bearing on this.
What reason does Vader have to do what Tarkin tells him to do? He has none because Tarkin can do nothing to him. He respects him because he chooses to.
I'd like to point out that Anakin humbled himself to Palpatine long before the whole Padme thing. In AotC, they have a conversation where Anakin thanks him for all he's done and about the level of respect he has for him (or so I remember).

Off the top of my head, Leia at least addresses him as "Tarkin".
I'm not sure the title "Grand Moff" is ever spoken on screen, but it does appear in the credits.

Anakin respected him as a father figure. That's not quite the same thing.

Well, thanks to RotS, it seems he knew Tarkin for the next 20 years or whatever it is. It's very possible that a still young Darth Vader could be impressionable by Tarkin.
