My view: In a few places, I think they already did hit $5 or close to $5. Agree.

I assume this means "average price" since when pundits say "gas prices have hit $X" that's usually what they mean.
Disagree.
They've already discovered that $4 is the real breaking point for consumers where demand takes a sharp downturn and people legitimately start cutting back. On top of that, demand is going to do nothing but decrease with increased hybrids and electric cars on the road.

They already hit like $4 this past summer. All it would take is an economic recovery, or instability in the middle east or Russia. Either one of these on their own is iffy, but I think the chance of one is decent. China and India's consumption will continue to rise, of course, which might be enough for a 20% increase alone.

Agree. Demand in the US probably won't go up and might go down, with cars becoming more efficient, but it's a good point that gas demand from China and India will rapidly grow. I'm not sure that $4 really is a point where consumers start cutting back a lot on driving; I think it could be that oil was just a huge bubble in the summer of 2008, and the recession burst it. But now that it's back at $4, it might be there for good.
might be a good thing if the price hike gets people to cut back and maybe walk a little, if anything they should institute a sliding tax on gas based on BMI where in shape people get a discount at the expense of the many whales we have in this country

Sorry, an unspoken rule about AoD is that I can't really clarify nominations from other people. I know that sounds silly, but I don't want to say how I would interpret it, because the nominators might have wanted it to be interpreted differently. Additionally, it can result in a lot of changed votes, which can make tallying a pain. If one or more of the nominators wants to clarify, they are welcome to do so. It is just open to interpretation for now.

If we are talking about individual gas stations, then this has technically already happened. There are a few gas stations in really remote areas that are always 1-2 dollars above anywhere else in the country. A good example is this one gas station on route 1 in California, in the middle of a 40+ mile stretch of a two lane road that winds its way along the coastal cliffs.

Disagree. Perhaps just because recently gas prices have gone down by about 30 cents in my area. It seems to fluctuate more than anything these days. And there would be MASSIVE backlash if it got anywhere near five bucks a gallon.
