I don't really think of them as rivals. I see a good rivalry as two characters who are on somewhat equal footing and counter each other. Sometimes a bigger bad guy will come along and these two will have to team up to battle greater evil.

Mario/Sonic > Mario/Bowser
Mega Man/Proto Man > Mega Man/Dr. Wily
Mario/Wario > Mario/Bowser
Sonic/Knuckles > Sonic/Dr. Robotnik

etc.

I'll give you Mario/Sonic and Mega Man/Proto Man...and I guess even Sonic/Knuckles > Sonic/Eggman, although Sonic and Knuckles haven't been rivals for a long time and I'd be more likely to nominate him with Shadow or even Blaze. But no, Mario/Wario is not better than Mario/Bowser.

That's kind of all they've got, though... The latter was a pretty big slap in the face to Wario, but he got over it, and they haven't had a distinct rivalry since. At least Mario/Donkey Kong has a few games including a recent one

Warioland is like basically my favorite GBC game, even moreso than Pokemon or LA.

So to me their rivalry is golden.

I like Wario/Captain Syrup better. Warioland was the first game I owned and Warioland 2 was my first hyped sequel. You should nom them too. No rule against nomming a character more than once.

Mario/Wario shouldn't really be considered rivals aside from the fact that Wario is "Mario" with an upside-down M.

I've been saying for years that Nintendo needs to make a Mario & Luigi game with Wario & Waluigi as playable rivals, but alas.
