TBQH, I really don't know how to go about ranking these. I really don't know anything about schools that I haven't attended.

Brown is the greatest and best university on the planet.
Yale's residential system is pretty chill.
Harvard has a cool math department.
Dartmouth is also pretty chill but they play beer pong with paddles which is a minus.
Princeton also has a cool math department but the whole eating club thing? eww.
Cornell doesn't deserve to be s*** on by the rest of the ivies but I don't want to go to college to commit suicide.
UPenn is kinda lol. Wharton is the only really respected thing about it and undergrad business schools? just study econ instead, it's a better option.
Columbia's core curriculum seems like the most painful thing possible.

Sort of tempted to downgrade the top three for rejecting me, but I'll be applying to at least Harvard, probably Princeton and maybe Yale for grad school, so there's still time for them to redeem themselves!

+8 Dartmouth (Wah hoo wah!)
+7 Princeton
+6 Yale
+5 Columbia
+4 Harvard
+3 Penn
+2 Cornell
+1 Brown

LOL Brown

May as well justify since I actually have experience with them.

-Go to Dartmouth, love it. Kinda obvious there. Also we play the correct form of beer pong.
-Princeton is smaller, rural, and undergrad focused much like Dartmouth and is therefore similarly cool.
-Yale has the best grad school in the country with their law school, and is slightly less likely to do the dumb things Harvard does
-I actually like Columbia's core curriculum idea, and while I don't really care for urban campuses Columbia's is one of the best you'll find. That said, they still openly have legacy students which is lame.
-Harvard is rather bad with undergrads, and still has a lot of wacky nonsense going on with their administration and professors.
-Penn is in Killadelphia and really doesn't stand out in any way except for Wharton
-Cornell. Uh, yeah. The other school. Hey, we had to get to 8 to have a good athletic setup.
-Brown is a fruity place for hippies with no academic standards where you can pass/fail your way to a degree.

SubDeity posted...
-Brown is a fruity place for hippies with no academic standards where you can pass/fail your way to a degree.

a) our acceptance rate was lower than yours this year (8.7% vs somewhere above 10%). "no standards" my ass.
b) most Brown people don't pass/fail their way to a degree - that's a false stereotype. most of us who want to go to grad school are taking all the courses we can to a degree (there are some that are mandatory satisfactory/no credit, but those are mostly intro courses).

I am taking zero pass/fail courses, and I'll be a math major (Sc.B.) which is not a joke degree at all.

c) we're also undergrad focused, much more than any school save possibly Dartmouth and Princeton.

and i'll take "throwing the ball into a cup" thank you. classic.

don't sleep on Cornell! its engineering department is elite. better than any other Ivy.

its hard sciences are also legit, though not quite as well-regarded. It's getting a lot more competitive as a whole.

Don't go to either school, but I want to point out that that may be precisely why Brown's acceptance rate is lower!

Brown does give very high grades compared to other schools, and this is an advantage to students who apply to grad school. Medical and law schools at least care a lot about your undergrad GPA, and very little about the context (it matters very little how hard your school or your major is, or how impressive your GPA is relative to your classmates).

From a student's point of view, these are good things about Brown.

yeah, there is grade inflation here, i won't dispute that.

med and law schools would probably care more about your GPA percentile at a school with more grade deflation. Brown doesn't officially calculate GPA though.

I wouldn't know, I'm planning on going to grad school in math/cs/something related and independent research factors heavily into that! grad school is really more important to your prospects in academia than where you went to undergrad.

and brown is an awesome place to go. Not knocking dartmouth either - it seems like a lot of fun. but I'd take Brown's sciences over Dartmouth's, and the open curriculum is a huge plus.

All acceptance rate reflects is how many people apply relative to the number of spots. That's it. It doesn't imply standards in the slightest, unless you want to argue that Alice Lloyd College has higher standards than all the Ivies, MIT, and Caltech. Standards are reflected in things like grade inflation and not allowing people to pass/fail everything.

b) most Brown people don't pass/fail their way to a degree - that's a false stereotype.

The fact that you can and some people do is bad enough.

most of us who want to go to grad school are taking all the courses we can to a degree (there are some that are mandatory satisfactory/no credit, but those are mostly intro courses).

I highly doubt most Brown students go on to a grad degree in a specific field. A big chunk won't do grad school at all while many others will do law or business which don't require any particular degree.

At least, I certainly hope most aren't going onto grad school outside of the professions because it takes 5+ years only to gain entry into perhaps the nation's most brutal job market.

med and law schools would probably care more about your GPA percentile at a school with more grade deflation. Brown doesn't officially calculate GPA though.

While we would like to believe this, it's basically not true. There's an organization (LSAC and AMCAS) that you send your transcripts to, and they calculate your GPA based on the grades on there. So everyone across the country has a standardized GPA. They don't adjust for grade inflation or the difficulty of the program.

Med and law schools care about making their admissions stats as high as possible, so they treat grades from all colleges more or less the same, since what they have to report is their median GPA according to LSAC/AMCAS. These stats influence their rankings heavily and they take them very seriously. Some law schools at least have gotten pretty ridiculous with gaming the system to maximize their medians.

For example, here's a graph for Washington University in St. Louis's law school from last year (the data is self-reported by applicants).

http://washu.lawschoolnumbers.com/stats/1011/

Based on that graph, if you have a 168+ LSAT you are admitted no matter how low your GPA is. But if you have a 167, you need a 3.7-3.8 to avoid a waitlist. Why? Because the school was trying to raise its LSAT median to 168 last year, and since people with 168+ and high GPAs usually choose other schools over them, they had to admit a lot of people with low GPAs in order to get the 168 median.

If a person is going to be below the GPA median, it doesn't impact the median how far below it they are. So, if you want 168/3.7 medians, it makes sense to reject the 167/3.6 person and take the 168/2.5 person.
