What could it be?

Multiplayer, duh.

Well the first and foremost thing a lot of you are suspecting is that it's going to be a big multiplayer announcement. While I wouldn't put it outside the realm of possibility by a long shot, the (often-suppressed) fact of the matter is that Bioware has denied ME3 will have any multiplayer features tirelessly for the past several months now. Various websites have stubbornly insisted otherwise until corrected, leaving a huge misunderstanding in play.

Again, I wouldn't say it's unfathomable. They're headed by EA now and what EA wants, EA typically gets. But until it's announced I'm not putting much stock into it. Casey Hudson (Bioware Edmonton; Mass Effect series' lead developer) has proven himself relatively reliable in the past so I trust him for the time being.

A new squadmate reveal!

Certainly another possible scenario. Thus far though, the Mass Effect team has been very hush-hush other than a constant insistence that ME3's 'massive war story' will change the scope of how the squadmate system operates so that you're guaranteed to see everyone who fought alongside you in 1 and 2 in a reasonable manner (fighting the Reapers somewhere) but whether or not they join you and for how long is often a mystery.

If it does wind up a squadmate reveal, personally I hope it's confirmation that we get an ME2-introduced team member back full-time. Miranda, Legion, Grunt, Thane, Mordin, Jack. Zaeed and Kasumi too. Love all these characters. Wasn't too huge on Jacob and Samara but they weren't bad either.

Something else!

This is actually the most likely scenario to those in-the-know on BSN. I'm going with the long-confirmed FemShep trailer that marketing director Silverman claimed was underway due to overwhelming fan demand for Jennifer Hale's character to receive some proper marketin' lovin'. It's been under an embargo for some time. Fits the bill.

There's also the fact that James Vega's VA is supposedly a closely-guarded industry secret that they've been planning to unveil for a long time now and 'pushed back the announcement' recently. He must have someone huge voicing his role. This is another very big possibility.

Man, ME does seem like it would eventually lend itself to some sort of multiplayer. Obviously, ME3 probably isn't the best game to implement it in, but a side-story style game featuring 4 player online MP would be pretty cool.

Anything's possible but with Microsoft publishing ME1 I wouldn't hold my breath.

Then again, I'm of the (often criticized) opinion that that isn't going to mean much in the grand scheme of things. Someday they'll release a trilogy package to rake in some serious sales again and they'll have to deal with that issue at that point so why not sooner?

Casey Hudson has stated that the team has given 'serious consideration' to future Mass Effect titles integrating multiplayer aspects once Shepard's story is done and over with.

Basically, it would still have the story elements and interactions in single player, but when you select a mission, 3 other players can join up for the mission.

I think that's like Diablo 2ish or something, unless I'm mistaken.

There are certainly some red flags in play that would tend to agree with you. Bioware Edmonton has a job opening posted for a Senior Tester -- Online Specialist.

I'd still like to trust Hudson on the matter but there are all sorts of reasons I can see why others will not.

Personally, very few online multiplayer components do anything for me. Only playing a multiplayer game with someone right next to me is ever all that fun. I'm of a dying breed in that regard though. Only the fighting genre (which damn, I don't much care for!) tries to work with me on that one.

Thanks to online, I now can play games with friends that no longer live near me, and I don't have to share a screen with them (the best). The only time I really enjoy playing together is the LEGO games.

Not really an issue to me since most of my friends live nearby and multiplayer really means that little to me in general.

I'm not saying it's a bad thing. It definitely has its obvious ups. Just... not for me. I'd rather Edmonton's team worked on an amazing single-player campaign and only an amazing single-player campaign to cap off the trilogy properly.

I mean, I might just be the biggest ME fan on B8 these days and I still wouldn't buy an MMO for it. Just not my thing, the whole online gig.

...that and there's no way my laptop would run it anyway.

I'm thinking it will be a spin-off game. They say that ME3 is the end of Shepard's story, I doubt they take any of the focus off of it.

A good point and it would explain the call for an online tester too without contradicting Hudson's constant turn-downs of multiplayer rumors.

Actually, after Dragon Age 2, I'd love to see that become an MMO or at least have a multiplayer element.
