Trying to rank something like this is an exercise in futility imo, but I expect Female, Mexican, Single, and Married Without Family to have the easiest go of things within our lifetimes. I think a Gay, Atheist, or Muslim candidate will have more of his work cut out for him. As for Asians, are there even any national-level Asian politicians outside of Hawaii?

Menji76 posted... Female- gonna happen soon maybe 4 years Gay- a little further off, though rumor abound that James Buchanan was gay Atheist- Thomas Jefferson Muslim- maybe never I dont see religion remaining important and americans not wanting someone vaguely christian Asian- within 28 years Mexican- could happen soon, 4 years Single (not married)- we've had two of these- cleveland and Buchanan Married without a family- Cleveland got married in office and had no children
in years that last one may or may not have already happened.
We've already had single and married without family. We've arguably had an atheist President in Thomas Jefferson. While he definitely wasn't one for organized Christianity, as far as I know he never came out and said "I am an atheist" or "I do not believe in any sort of deity" so I don't know that we can say FOR SURE that he was.
Female, Asian, and Mexican I believe could happen at basically any time. I don't think being any of these things would hold back an electable candidate. Female and Asian are just non-issues as far as I can see. Mexican might affect some opinions but not really; party alignment would trump heritage among those who would feel negatively about it (they'd vote for a Mexican Republican despite their heritage, and they wouldn't vote for a Democrat whether they were Mexican or not).
Openly gay President won't happen until we have gay marriage nationwide. Once it does happen, I'd say we could see an openly gay President within 20-30 years. I do think an openly gay Republican would have an easier time getting elected, simply because I don't think you can get a Democratic base fired up to vote against a gay candidate the way you can a Republican base.
Muslim I think will happen within 70 years. This group probably has the biggest year-to-year improvement in chances, but a future terrorist attack would be a huge setback.
Atheist I honestly can't put a timeframe on. I just don't see it ever happening without some big change in American culture that I'm not sure is coming. Atheism has lower acceptance than just about anything else.
You know, I don't think people even talk about these two demographics all that often. Last one I can recall being in the news was Sotomayor. Isn't that, kinda, well... racist?

There never was a post. Swamp gas from a weather balloon was trapped in a thermal pocket and refracted the light from Venus.

There is no evidence whatsoever that Jefferson was an atheist.
As for the rest...I think a lot of you are overstating the likelihood of a lot of these happening. Even if gays were 100% accepted and had an equal chance of being elected relative to everybody else, it'd still take ages for a gay president to be elected simply because gays are a small minority.

SubDeity wants to vote for Calvin Coolidge. [Evil Republican] Play Der Langrisser.
Female - Megawati Gay - In 500 years or so Atheist - Never Muslim - >_> Asian - >____> Mexican - Never Single (not married) - Maybe in 20 years Married without a family - Very possible
Female - it will happen eventually, herstory will demand it, and womyn everywhere will then realize not a damn thing will change. Gay - maybe a bit further from happening than a female. maybe both at the same time. *insert lesbian joke here* Atheist - god would never allow it Muslim - God would never allow it Asian - Depends on how China feels in the next few decades or how subversive Japan is. Now all I can think about is that game where a japanese girl wakes up and is president. Mexican - Maybe if the US starts annexing the lower parts of north america. On a tangential note, no canadian option? That's mighty..countryist? of you! Executive order: all milk is to be bagged! Single (not married) - 2096: after the war people get less picky Married without a family - 2100 : luckily the only other survivor was a woman
