You forgot Left 4 Dead 2.

Also Dead Rising 2?

There weren't any horror games in 2009, 2011?

Fatal Frame 2 should be on there, not sure of the date but it is one of the scariest games I ever played, moreso than 1 and 3. Some of them I wouldn't consider horror, but I guess it's how you look at them. Doom for example, I don't think it's scary but I suppose it has it's moments.

Also Siren is pretty scary, haven't gotten around to playing all of the psn downloadable ones though.

not sure i'd call manhunt a horror game exactly.
there's also a bunch of visual novels that fit this bill. Higurashi being the cleanest one (as in, no H), and one of the biggest of the genre as well, certainly more than some other games on that list. i also assume you'll mention Fatal Frame 2 in passing of 1 because it's generally considered the scariest one.

...yeah, after posting i saw Onimusha on that list. uhh... no.
yes, there starts being some lovecraftian things at the end of the 1st game and there's some undead enemies, but it damn well ain't horror. and DMC definitely has nothing to do with the genre. friggin' Castlevania has more to do with it.

however, something that fits the genre MUCH more than either of those would be the Legacy of Kain series, as that series probably can fit the genre in most ways.

onimusha... really isn't on any edge, no. for the majority of the game you're just some dude in japan fighting with magical swords.

only in the last eighth of the game do things go really weird. you'd never know until then. felt more like they just threw it in there without knowing a thing of what they were doing.

Nawh, not really. FEAR has that whole thing with the creepy little ghost girl Alma. Also the game has more jump scares than Doom. I'm not saying take Doom out, I'm just saying FEAR is in fact scarier, imo.

well, if you're trying to stick to the same number of games... yeah, Legacy of Kain over something like BloodRayne works better. that series' main claim to fame is the lead chick starred in playboy.

Amnesia being there while Penumbra's not also doesn't really make sense. same developers, except Penumbra put 'em on the map big time as a horror game developer.

and Higurashi def represents visual novels better than pretty much any other in this field; yeah there's a bunch more gorier or darker ones, but few of them are bigger or come close to it.

A couple more candidates:

- S.T.A.L.K.E.R: Shadow of Chernobyl (or one of the other entries in the series)
- LSD (if only because the only other game that has come anywhere close to attempting the type of horror it portrayed would be Yume Nikki; hell, I guess Yume Nikki would work here as well)
- Maniac Mansion (gonna microwave me some hamsters)

And yet you have Okage: Shadow King?

Like...I recognize that game, but only because it was one of those "really obscure JRPGs that come up in trivia".

I feel like Koudelka is less obscure than that (not to mention Shadow Hearts, although those are less and less horror, more and more humor).

2002 was the first story, and a new story in the game got released every so often afterwards to make a bunch of different mini-stories to explain the bigger one, which is what's generally referred to as the game. it's a doujinshi game that broke 100,000 sales, and the 2nd to reach that goal. from there, pretty much grew into a bunch of other mediums and at this point the guys who made it are probably too big to really stay in that circle. though for horror visual novels, it's pretty much the go-to if you don't want to sleep. if you want tentacle monsters or demons and the like, you've got plenty of other choices. just none that are really as big.
