I honestly thought that Portal was overrated so I was a little hesitant about Portal 2, but I ended up liking it a lot more than the original. Definitely one of the best games of the year so far.

everything I've seen has supported Portal 2 as being obviously superior to Portal 1, and that everyone who remembers it differently 'just needs to play it again and see how inferior it is'. I played Portal 1 a few months ago and still thought it was pretty good. Portal 2 reveals that Portal 1 was a glorified tech demo? we realized that in 2007. that doesn't make it less awesome.

the WCC stuff was never clever or interesting. it was more just the constant taunting from Glados. I can't even explain it; it's the same in Portal 2 but it feels stale this time around whereas it felt pretty clever and fresh in Portal 1. I can fully admit that a lot of my preference thus far for P1 is that it came first and was fresh, but even when I go back to it again it retains the same fresh feeling. I love the level progression in it. you start out just walking around, then picking up cubes, then getting one portal gun, then two, then you start flinging. soon after that you're into the meat of the game where the game stops giving you hints and lets you wander around. the level design feels paranoid and you always feel like you're about to break the game. that was always the beauty of Portal - you felt like you were doing something truly exciting, something you weren't supposed to do because it was so crazy and new. I'm happy with it being a 3 hour game because it never gets old or feels like it's just going over the same ground again.

with Portal 2, I'm often just going through the motions using the few things I have access to. the puzzle aspect of the game is kind of missing. the lateral thinking is often gone and replaced by trying to find what I can actually do instead of how I can use it. when the "where?" replaces the "how?" then I think you've lost something special.

but, I'm only 2ish hours in, so maybe it changes.

I was reading somewhere that the "find the one spot in this room you can throw a portal on" was a direct result of playtesting and the testers not being able to figure anything out. They chose to limit the options to make the answers more apparent.

Not sure how much truth there is to that or even where I read it though.

okay yeah this got a lot better. up to Chapter 4 - chamber 19 - and it's getting pretty fun with the puzzles. I love nailing turrets with lasers.

You know how I feel about Paul, Ulti! What I don't know is how you feel about Portal 2. Good game? Great? Better than the first? For me, it's easily the GotY, but I'm not sure how many people share that sentiment.

Probably would have liked 2 better if it didn't have the awful gel levels, though Wheatley was awesome.

I'd expect Portal 2 to be the consensus GOTY on here until Zelda happens. no Square game, no Nintendo game, gotta go with Valve!

The thing with Portal 2 is that it's Portal 2... not (Portal 1) 2.

Everyone has already played Portal. They can't just redo Portal and have everything feel new again, they had to go with a different design style that would work under the assumption that you already played the first game. It had to be its own game, not just "the sequel to Portal". I think they pulled it off pretty well considering how many people just wanted a remake of Portal.

I think the biggest difference is that Portal 2 just has so much more stuff. In P1, you just had Chell, rooms, and Glados. In P2 there's Wheatley, all these moving walls, turrets, CJ, tons more dialogue, etc., so it doesn't have that sterile feel that P1 had.

Also, I noticed that the co-op levels feel so much like Portal 1 for the same reasons above. It's just the robots, rooms, and Glados.

yeesh, chamber 19 is like the fun jumping level from Portal 1 but so much worse

I spent way too long on that level because I never saw the first area you're supposed to jump to and instead tried to redirect lasers in super dumb ways

Oh and I said to read the review because my best friend, an English major, loved it and he's picky about reading stuff.

The short of it is Portal 2 is as good as it could have possibly been given what Valve was working with. There were impossible expectations and Valve met them by using a different kind of charm.

Portal 2 is unbelievably good IMO. Way better than the original. After I played it the third time within a month of it coming out I had really good replies to the most common complaints about the game (e.g. too few portalable surfaces), but now I don't remember them.

2 was way better. You had more characters, better control on the Katamari, and more varied stages. People that say the original was better need to go back and play it again. There's all these internet memes associated with the original that just cloud your memories and make you think it was better than it was

I'm still surprised at how well Valve did co-op. Obviously it's the natural progression to have 2 portalers, but I imagine is must be way more complicated to design levels with more than 1 player.

In most ways, yes. Katamari Damacy does have better presents IIRC (King's Mask for life), as well as the best song in the series:



Besides, Katamari Forever is the pinnacle of the series.
