While meeting with the owners, Stern pointed at Wade while making a comment, a source told Broussard. Wade felt as if Stern was belittling him and yelled at the commissioner.

"You're not pointing your finger at me," Wade said, sources told ESPN The Magazines Ric Bucher. "I'm not your child."

I can't believe that the NBA is going to kill a season after their most successful full season since Jordan (and maybe even earlier).

argh

During these disputes, is it usually just a case of players versus owners, or does the players' side also argue for benefits on behalf of other team employees (towel boys, concessions people, trainers, cheerleaders, etc)? It's hard to sympathize with either side if it's exclusively a case of the mega rich vs. the mega man 10 rich.

At least we know LeBron should be willing to take 75 cents on the dollar to save owners some cash, as long as it means he can avoid that fourth quarter.

I'm not sure if it's the same situation in the NBA (it has been a player-fueled league since Stern took charge), but with the NFL, the league and its brand name seem infinitely bigger than any single player. During their own labor talks, I wonder if the owners could have just let the players strike and then hire second-rate NFL Europe fill-ins for pennies on the dollar. That **** might have worked. I think the problem there would have been the league's image hit, and not necessarily viewers caring all that much about the decreased quality of the football.

it's the ridiculosity of the player contracts killing competitiveness/profitability that did the NBA in, yoblazer

it's a lot of things. bad owners signing bad deals, mostly. this deal is all about the owners protecting themselves from each other.

Basketball is more star-driven than other sports for obvious reasons. it's flashier, there are no helmets, one individual can change the game much more than in any other big team sport, etc. that's why Kobe and Lebron are more popular than any NFL guy despite the NFL dwarfing the NBA in popularity.
