he wanted the marble rye bread that she had, the last one there was at the bakery. He offered her 50 bucks for it but she still wouldn't give it to him so he stole it from her.

Yeah. George needed the rye to replace the rye that his parents brought to Susan's house for a party, then took back when Susan's parents didn't serve it with the food. Because apparently he didn't want them to think that his parents took the rye back.
