Gold is supposedly one of the best metals in the world, but it is softer than silver and even iron, making for a weak material for weaponry.

Depends on the situation I suppose. Diamonds are one of the hardest substances on Earth, yet Platinum is valued at the best of the best (look at the music industry). Function vs Fashion I would suppose.
