The Pokemon train's still going ahead full steam-- Samus and Ridley are the latest victims, as they fall behind by a huge amount early on in the match and struggle to make the spread close. In the end, team Metroid fell short of even covering the spread. Kotetsu makes a big gain as his main competitors falter or stay idle; five more matches separate him and victory.

Pretty weird how I've gone from taking home the game the last two years to not even cracking the Top Five all season here in 2011... I mean if I was way off my game all bracket I could understand it, but I've been perfect in the Battle, might finish with my best season ever in the Oracle, and employed the same Spread strategy I've used with success the last two times around.

Guess it was just a matter of the lines being better overall, aka good enough to keep me from ever getting on one of my patented 10+ match streaks!

In a remarkably anticlimactic match, Link and Ganondorf blitz Cloud and Sephiroth with a huge lead that the FF7 pair never really recover from, consigning them to the 3rd-place match against the suddenly dangerous-looking Pokemon Trainers. Forget the spread-- Cloud and Sephiroth will have their hands full trying to take third place overall. With the end of the contest fast approaching, it was a time for action for the leaderboard; unfortunately, they expected better from the underdogs and paid a heavy price for Cloud and Sephiroth's failure. GTM and Master Moltar move up to fill the open leaderboard spots, while Kotetsu, despite a big loss, remains in a now nearly impregnable position to win it all.

(iGenesis-- I merely voided your bet for that match. Further penalty seemed unwarranted given I didn't think there was intent to deceive, but a bet edited to be an invalid one might still cause confusion for other competitors. In general-- and this applies to all bettors-- when making changes to your bets, please do them in separate posts to avoid such situations. I declared this rule in the first match but never added it to the daily rules-- my mistake.)

It's all over. Kotetsu never made a bet on Link/Mario, and in doing so, locked in his first place finish.

For the first and only time this contest, the favourite loses the match (as well as, obviously, the spread). The one match of the contest that didn't count in the bracket/battle challenges turned out to be the most exciting, with a match that played around the 50% mark all day before the trainers pull off a 10-vote win. At this point Kotetsu's victory is essentially guaranteed; GTM and Moltar continue a nice string of wins that keep them on the leaderboard.

Also, a random tidbit-- if the spread betting submitted its lines as oracle guesses, it would have scored a total of 2898.52, for a 45.29 average-- good for 25th place overall, considerably higher than the host's score. (Admittedly this speaks more to my own sub-par prognostication abilities than anything else.)
