This will be a bracket-voting contest held on Bracketmaker or Challonge or whatever the cool kids are doing nowadays.
I know you can see the big wall of text below. Relax. The requirements are pretty simple. If it's a fictional organization, you can nominate it. But, if you're considering nominating something, and there is any doubt in your mind as to whether it qualifies as "a fictional organization" - please do consult the rules below.
The usual rules apply as well: - You have unlimited nominations - You can not personally nominate the same thing more than once (and you cannot abuse this rule using alts)
How many entries will be in the bracket? I don't know - how many are you nominating? I'll take the top 64, or the top 128, or the top 256 if I really have to. Hoping for lower numbers though - 64 or 128, pending popularity.
One last thing: PLEASE indicate where the fictional group you're nominating is from. If I can't figure it out myself, I will have to throw out the nomination.
The complete unabridged requirements for nominations are:
- They must be fictional organizations from any myth, legend or media source. Nominations may not be for groups appearing in real life. Good Example: Torchwood (Doctor Who) Bad Example: United States Marine Corps (USA)
- This is an organizations contest, not a teams contest. If the group you're nominating was never a cohesive, formal unit but only happened to work together and did not really comprise a true "organization", then they probably do not qualify. Good Example: The Angels (Charlie's Angels) Bad Example: Carter and Lee (Rush Hour)
- As a followup to the above comment, as a general rule, an "organization" is larger and more formal than a "team" - this means, for example, that as far as pro wrestling is concerned, a Stable is fine, but a Tag Team is not. Good Examples: nWo, Hart Foundation (Pro Wrestling) Bad Examples: Edge and Christian, Hardy Boyz (Pro Wrestling)
- I will NOT accept organizations/groups/leagues from any real organized religion, as this is offensive, disputed, and not in the spirit of the contest. Fictional religions are fine. Good Example: Church of Glabados (Final Fantasy Tactics) Bad Example: Holy Trinity (New Testament)
- As a general rule, if a group was invented in fiction, but it ended up gaining popularity and becoming a group in real life, then the nomination is allowed, but it is to be understood that it represents only the fictional version of that group. Good Example: Jedi Order (Star Wars) Bad Example: Jedi Knights (Grassroots Movement: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jedi_census_phenomenon )
- As another general rule, if a group exists/existed in real life, but it was depicted in fiction, then the nomination is NOT allowed unless the fictional group is fundamentally different in very significant ways from the real group it was based on (more so than just being run by a particularly corrupt individual). Good Example: The Church (Priest) Bad Example: The Catholic Church (as depicted in the Da Vinci Code)

Good question! Important Note: The "Good Examples" mentioned in my original post were not nominations. If you want to see them in the contest, do nominate them yourself. Also, if we get more nominations than we have spots in the bracket, priority will be based on number of noms per entry, so there is never any harm in seconding an existing nom.

Ours is not to reason why, ours is but to do and die.
This was done without looking at anyone elses nominations, so there are probably good ones that I missed, but anyway:
S.E.E.S (Persona 3) Cruxis (Tales of Symphonia) The God Generals (Tales of the Abyss, if they qualify) The Order of the Phoenix (Harry Potter) Dumbledore's Army (Sue me, I like Harry Potter) The Al Bhed (Final Fantasy X) Organization XIII (Kingdom Hearts) The Fellowship of the Ring (Lord of the Rings, not sure if this one qualifies either) The Reapers (The World Ends With You) Fight Club/Project Mayhem (Fight Club)
I have been struggling since writing the original rules with where exactly the line between "team" and "organization" lies.
I'm gonna make the call that the Fellowship of the Ring DOES count, on the grounds that it's a formally sanctioned group whose existence is acknowledged by the relevant authorities, and they bothered to give the group a formal name (which is highly symbolic of it being an official thing).
I'll make decisions on some of the other ones you guys are questioning at some later date and time. I'm personally unfamiliar with a lot of them, so research will be necessary.
But I'm probably not going to be too much of a hardass about it.
Here's one I'm willing to put up to a vote/discussion, since the definition is sort of in flux:
The Seven Samurai (from the Japanese film of the same name). I've wanted to nominate them from the get-go, but I haven't been sure about whether they'd qualify. My "rule of thumb" has been "more than 2 people, and going on more than 1 adventure or mission together" - by that logic, the Seven Samurai seem like more of a "team". The main reason I'm still questioning the matter is the fact that later on in the film they essentially decided to make themselves a formal brotherhood of sorts, even painting a flag representing their group's members. That symbolic moment makes them seem to have the structure and formality required of an "organization" - especially since they're in a highly structured Japanese caste society, and these sorts of things aren't taken lightly.
Thoughts?

Yeah, it's rather hard to define. It would've been easier to make this a Best Fictional Group Contest (more than two people, same objectives, etc.). But I think as long as nobody raises any objection to the nominations, it should be allowed in.
That is a good point. I started out calling it "organizations" because the first examples that came to mind were highly organized, large companies like Torchwood and CTU. But yeah, it doesn't have to be that way. I still want to rule out anything too similar to pro wrestling Tag Teams, though, since the dynamic between two people is a lot different and can never really be a "group" - it's a partnership, but they'd be thought of as practically the same person, so.... yeah.
