8. Shaymin is a huge douchebag. There’s really no other way to put it; he is a huge douchebag and the heroes just put up with it and love him anyway.

Yes that was my largest problem with this movie. Even more unforgivable than a Swiss cheese plot is the completely unlikeable protagonist it introduces. This Shaymin is probably my least favorite character in any animated film- nay- any animated media ever.

Btw according to two people earlier in this topic or maybe the end of your last topic, he is actually a she. What a b****.

Really? I honestly thought it was a boy.

**** if you think I'm going through and fixing all those mistakes, though. This movie doesn't warrant that much effort.

Shaymin turns back into his hedgehog form (even though it’s daytime)

It's the proximity of all of that ice--they explain this in the movie. The Gracidea transformation actually happens in every game from Platinum onwards, and sure enough, Shaymin can't take on its Sky Forme at night/in caves and also reverts back if afflicted with the Freeze status. Of course, as a Grass/Flying type, Sky Forme Shaymin is 4x weak to Ice-type moves anyway...

As for Shaymin's gender, as a legendary, technically it doesn't have one. But yeah, I always thought it seemed more female. Sometimes it's painfully obvious that a "technically genderless" Pokémon that has a characterization is meant to be one gender or the other--usually male, but not always. Anyway, let's see what TV Trops has to say about this...

Ambiguous Gender: Shaymin, even for a "genderless" legendary. In Land Forme, speaks with a soft, feminine voice (and in Japanese, uses feminine pronouns); in Sky Forme, it is headstrong and speaks with a much more masculine voice (and accompanying Japanese pronouns.)

...Well, that answers that. Shaymin is most definitely genderless, and seems to identify as a different gender depending on which forme it's in.

Split Personality: Shaymin in Land Forme is cowardly, rude, and ungrateful, but when it changes to Sky Forme, it becomes brave, adventurous, and headstrong, almost like it becomes an entirely different Pokemon

Sounds about right.

The Psyduck Stops Here!
"If you're gonna be like that, I'm gonna be like this!"
Score: 3/10

The heroes are walking along a road between two high cliffs when three Psyduck block their way. They attack the heroes, so Ash has Pikachu run directly at them in a straight line without attacking. When this brilliant strategy fails, the heroes check the map for another route. Unfortunately, the only other road will take days to reach the next city (because I guess Japan isn’t an industrialized enough nation to link its cities with more than one dirt road), so Ash throws out Turtwig and tells it to do stuff. He is then surprised when it loses a three-on-one fight. Then Dawn tries Piplup. Then Brock tries Croagunk. Then Ash tries Chimchar. Then Team Rocket tries Meowth. Then Brock tries Happiny. Then Dawn tries Swinub. They literally do this one at a time, never even considering attacking all at once. I mean, yes, okay, I get that you’re heroes and everything, but the Psyduck have a three-on-one advantage and they started it!

Well, Dawn theorizes that there may trouble ahead and the Psyduck are protecting them by stopping them, so Ash decides to check by using Gliscor to fly him over the Psyduck while Brock distracts them. I was unaware Gliscor could carry Ash? But okay.

Past the Psyduck is a forest, and in the forest is a lake full of Psyduck with eggs. Ash goes back to Dawn and Brock and informs them of the situation. Ash decides they need to prove that they mean no harm just when Team Rocket attacks in their balloon. They capture the Psyduck, and since catching wild pokemon is completely legal, the heroes immediately try to stop them. I love this next part, where Team Rocket attacks with Carnivine and Yanmega, so now the heroes attack with three pokemon at once. Three-one-three? Ridiculous. Two-on-three? Totally fair.

The Psyduck are still wary about letting the heroes through, but then another Psyduck shows up and informs everyone that the eggs are hatching. Little Psyduck are walking around everywhere, saying their names even though pokemon get their names from what humans called them (remember that episode?). Brock celebrates by giving the baby Psyduck some food, even though in earlier episodes, baby pokemon weren't able to eat solid food, and also, he could have cooked food for the adult Psyduck stopping them, he does stuff like that all the time.

Brock realizes that the episode still has five minutes left, so the heroes notice that the lake here is too small for this number of Psyduck. Brock checks the map and realizes the Lake Psyduck is actually some distance from here, so the heroes go to it and find three Muk, who presumably kicked out the pokemon with psychic moves. Now they’re willing to battle three-on-three (I hate you, heroes), and easily defeat the Muk. The Muk blast off and land in a swamp, which they find a much nicer home anyway because three female Muk just so happen to live in it. You know, it’s a rare children’s cartoon that implies sentient pollution is going to have sex with other sentient pollution.

The heroes met a nun who worshipped Slowpoke or something, who said that pokemon are only named what they're named because humans gave them those names, which obviously makes no sense.

Arcananine as a tatg partner sucks compared to Lucario/Kadabra

Agreed; Marley's Arcanine has a horrible moveset. Helping Hand, seriously? Not only is it annoying when you want her to actually help you defeat the enemy, but if you decide to try to catch a wild Pokémon while you're in there, Helping Hand could make you overkill it (although so could actually having it attack, so I guess that's not really a big deal.)

And it has Agility, which is almost useless considering the fact that both Helping Hand and Extremespeed already get priority over anything any of the opponents in that area have anyway.

For the record, since this is the second time this has been mentioned, I have never actually played a fourth generation pokémon game. In fact it is the only generation I have yet to touch. So when I say Marley and her Arcanine are awesome I'm exclusively basing my opinion on their anime appearance in which they are nothing but bossnicity personified. Thank you. That is all.

she is the best CotD tho, even if I am not sure if she counts since she is from the games

Definitely! And from what Bulbapedia implies, the anime character seems to have a different personality than the game character so she should count!!

But I meant specific Arcanines the heroes have encountered so far.

Camping It Up!
"Grimer, the Sludge Pokemon. It was born from sludge when a dirty stream was exposed to X-rays from the moon."
Score: 5/10

I think that quote pretty much sums up the entire show, really.

The heroes reach the Mountain Research Facility on Mount Coronet, whereupon they meet Professor Rowan. The narrator then tells us it's time for a weeklong "pokemon summer academy," because nothing excites childrens’ imaginations like summer school. Everyone is divided into three teams: red, blue, and green. The heroes are all on red, Jessie is on green, and Conway (remember him? The creepy not-rapist from the tag battle tournament?) is on the blue team. The professor and other adults award points to teams based on their performance in various challenges, and whichever team has the most point at the end of the week wins.

Everyone is given a random pokemon, and Ash and a random trainer named Anjy take an immediate dislike to each other. Anjy gets a Monferno and Ash gets a Raichu, both of whom dislike their trainers. Dawn gets a Grimer, Brock gets a Magnemite, Jessie gets a Smoochum, and Conway gets a Venomoth. Because of Anjy’s inattentiveness, Pikachu and Monferno get into a fight, but the show acts like Ash is equally at fault. It’s kind of a strange scene.

Well, whatever. Several scenes of bonding later, Ash and Raichu are a team, as are Anjy and Monferno, and the trainers put aside their differences and become friendly rivals. Anjy even admits that she hasn't started a pokemon journey yet because she's too busy with her job at a pokemon daycare. As opposed to Ash, who simply dropped out of school before he’d finished learning the finer points of long division.

Well, it’s time to battle! Brock beats Jessie, Dawn... battles Conway (it's not clear who wins), and it finally comes to Ash versus Anjy. Phew, good thing they happened to be paired up against each other. Imagine if Ash had spent this episode building a rivalry with Anjy only to have to battle Extra #4. Unfortunately, since Monferno and Raichu are both now in sync with their trainers, they tie perfectly. Congratulations, Ash. With almost eleven years of experience, you managed to tie someone with no experience at all.

The winning team for today is the blue team, but we get a To Be Continued, so we’ll see if Gryffindor House really loses after all.

I believe the associated trope is "Kuudere", or whatever TV Tropes is calling it now that they're trying to do away with tropes named in foreign languages. Seemingly emotionless, but actually has a sweet personality buried deep.

And yeah, I've heard that the anime f***ed with Elesa's personality. I wouldn't know, though, because I'm not watching the originals when they come out, and the dub has been in unexplained reruns for the past two weeks.

Why yes. Yes it does.

and Conway (remember him? The creepy not-rapist from the tag battle tournament?) is on the blue team.

I'm still wondering what the hell they were thinking. "Oh my god, the fans love how creepy we made this trainer! Let's bring him back for more!" That is probably exactly what happened. The writers were probably praised for putting such an obvious molester in the show and actually framing him as a mildly heroic (okay, true neutral with leanings of chaotic neutral) character, while the fans were losing their s*** on the message boards and whatever other social media they use in Japan, because they actually put a Scary-Shiny Glasses Guy who might be a chikan in Pokémon!

Well of course Ash is going to win.

I remember back in high school, there was this one kid, I don't even remember his name, who stood up on a lunch table and pretended to be Dumbledore. "Harry Potter! For destroying the school and bringing ruin to all those around you, I award Gryffindor five thousand points!"

Oh! Uh... blinged out Arcanine and accompanying overweight owner in that costume contest looked incredibly stupid. I was just joking around when I said they should've won with their awful gaudy getups. The entire moral of the episode was to show that simplicity and humility win beauty contests rather than all style and no substance.

There. I've said something unfavorable about an Arcanine on the show. ;)
