let's slow down here. I want to see Skyrim do more than just beat up Portal 2 before anointing it best western game ever. if it slams Zelda and Batman next time around, I'll feel better about saying that but even then, I think these games are kinda weak. these games remind me of 2009 where Uncharted and MW and something else all looked strong.
all that said, I've been behind Skyrim being the strongest western game since before it came out. I just don't want to proclaim it until it's shown what it can do. I actually think it's going to be game of the generation material when all is said and done.
If we do a final Multi-Platform poll tomorrow, I'm expecting only 7 games to make it into that poll. In last year's GotY polls, 7 games made it into the final Multi-Platform poll and the weakest game in the final Multi-Platform poll got 11.71% from one of the first 2 polls.
If 7 games make into tomorrow's poll, then Assassin's Creed: Revelations will barely miss the cut.

Seems pointless when SB's trying to streamline this process. He could have just taken the top two from each day and skipped this poll. Maybe he has something different planned for the end.

-LusterSoldier- posted... Close match for second place here, which is important if the top 2 games get to move on.
Would kinda suck if Portal 2 doesn't make it.. maybe he's planning on having a more focused GotY poll this year. 1 handheld, top 2 from exclusives and top 2 here?
Hm, Skyrim isn't looking as good now.. it is barely doubling Portal 2 after getting a tripling on it yesterday. I doubt it'll have any trouble winning GotY still, though.
Earlier today I played Skyrim for a good three hours. In that time, I:
*spoilers*
-Killed a bear -Saved a town from an attacking dragon -Broke into a bandits' hideout and sicced a captured tiger on their leader -halted the resurrection of a 500-year old Wolf Queen from raising undead minions and enslaving humanity -upgraded my one-handed weapons so they now do double damage
From the few Skyrim clips I've seen, I really like how you can "summon" elemental swords. I hope the game allows you to make fire, ice, or lightning swords, because I want to be a caster and will be all over that.

I don't see how it's appealing to hardcore fans it sucks compared to Morrowind, the PC version is an extremely unoptimized unplayable joke unless you spend an hour+ tweaking settings, and it has a severe lack of true content due to the radiant quest system being used way too much which any actual TES fan (or any player that actually pays attention to what they are doing) will see for the crap it really is.

Huh, I just realized that Arkham Asylum is now probably the strongest game of 2009. Considering City should end up as #3 for 2011, that's not a bad job at all from Bats.

Arkham Asylum was probably the #2 game of 2009 from those GotY polls, if not barely behind Uncharted 2. It hasn't really moved 'up' so much as CoD died.

How anyone can vote for a game as unfinished, unpolished and glitchy as Skyrim is beyond me. I enjoyed playing it, and sunk a crapload of hours into it, but just because it has so much content should not excuse it's glaring flaws. It doesn't even make my top 3 games of the year.

The concensus is that Fallout 3 overperformed on Brawl by some amount (due to a mix of a section of the site wanting a different winner and anti-Brawl voting) because otherwise the entire top quarter looks crazy strong (from memory GTAIII is about equal to Portal in direct x-stats, when everybody would expect Portal to run away with that match). The point is that Arkham Asylum probably gets doubled by the GOTD elite in a direct match, so Skyrim doesn't look too insane here.
I'd be prepared to take Skyrim over anything other than the top five (MM, FFX, Brawl, Melee, TP) from GOTD though. Who knows what happens against them.

Skyrim winning GOTD wouldn't really be that surprising. This may be NintendoFAQs, but close behind is RPGFAQs. Even factoring in Arkham Asylum being overrated, unless you want to argue Arkham City <= Arkham Asylum (in which case Portal 2 might be weak enough to cause a Portal drop) things look really really good for Skyrim. It's the most hyped game this generation other than Brawl, and unlike Brawl it lived up to it.
From: Yuri_LowelI | #491 JH777 your opinion is terrible. Cant wait until skyrim wins goty to see you cry.
Also did you guys play it on the crappy ps3 version or something?? I rarely had any game breaking glitches.
Either way its better than zelda. Batman portal and dark souls are better than zelda too.
lol I already know it's going to win and in my most recent skyrim post I didn't even say anything opinion based everything I said is a fact so no my "opinion" isn't terrible.

I could see Skyrim walking the GOTY poll but I don't ever see it beating any of the elites round here in a contest.
Would be interesting to have another games contest to test that though.

From: transcience | #493 I've been thinking about this.... it's going to be hilarious when Skyrim dominates GOTY and PS3 wins system of the year.
PS3 won last year and Mass Effect 2 won GOTY. PS3 has more exclusives, 360 is a multiplat console, i love the 360 and i'll admit that.
Also Skyrim v Brawl
I'd take Skyrim next year. BRawl has probably declined a lot. Obviously Skyrim isn't going anywhere near the retro Giants but it's the strongest Western game.
based everything I said is a fact so no my "opinion" isn't terrible.
The fact that Skyrim can be buggy to some people and not buggy to others? That's the only fact here. Saying morrowind is better isn't a fact. But keep reassuring yourself with the elitist talk.
From the 120 Hours i've spent on Skyrim compared to the 2 run through of SS, Skyrim is better no question. Though I'd put Dark Souls as my personal GOTY.
And I said earlier Dark Souls was a good shout for the #5 game this year and I was close. It's probably #5 or #6 depending on Uncharted. People thought the Shooters would be stronger but they are weak as hell. Assassins flopped too as expected.
We really need a game of the "generation" poll starting from 2006.
Times are changing in the industry moreso than the site. It's not as if the likes of Square are churning out the same quality of games and they just aren't as popular here or anything. The fact Skyward Sword is in anyways relevant at all in these polls when its predominantly not in most gaming medias GotY awards is evidence enough that gamefaqs hasn't changed.
The real test will come when (if?) Nintendo and Square start putting out well received games on consoles people care about again. Nintendo has the "well-received" part right, but the Wii's been rejected. Will the Wii U change that? We'll see. Square has forgotten how to make games for the best part of a decade, but is focusing on the PS3/360. Will they learn again? Maybe. Of course, the other big impediment to this happening is that the Japanese market has turned away from consoles towards handhelds in a big way.
What's going to be GameFAQs' 2012 GOTY? Mass Effect 3? Grand Theft Auto V? Bioshock Infinite? Are any Japanese games even going to be in the second tier? Seems clear to me that western games are going to go from strength to strength. They're not going to be winning Games Contests in the short term, but I think they might be contending sooner than many think.
