Back in 2007/2008 the only real indie releases anyone had heard of were Aquaria, Audiosurf, and World of Goo.

In 2011, we've had Minecraft, Bastion, The Binding of Isaac, Frozen Synapse, Trine 2, Terraria, Magicka, and probably multiple others I'm forgetting. It's kind of cool-- indie games have been getting increased visibility and as a result it seems like we're seeing a lot more quality titles.

Hopefully the trend continues for 2012.

Braid was pretty well known back then too I'd say. And Cave Story

Minecraft really was not 2011 by any means. You did miss Orcs Must Die! though, and Atom Zombie Smasher definitely needs some recognition too.

Well, ****. Once again, I forgot the PC got it significantly later (2009). And regarding Cave Story, I kind of worded the initial sentence poorly. I meant games that were released during 2007/2008.

I wanted to mention Chester, but I still haven't played it myself!

Well, Minecraft's "official" release was 2011. I wasn't quite sure where to place it, since it technically was available to the public in 2009, but it was nowhere near as popular and kind of completely different from what it ended up being. I guess 2010 is probably a better date to place it, though.

Regarding Orcs Must Die! and Atom Zombie Smasher, I was unsure if Orcs Must Die! was actually indie, and Atom Zombie Smasher isn't as popular or as good as the other games I've mentioned. There's also SpaceChem, which released on the 1st of this year.

Uh...okay. no one mentioned SMB, as far as I can see.

But yeah, the point I'm trying (and failing horribly) to make is that quality indie titles have been coming out a lot more frequently than they used to, which seemed fairly evident in 2011. And that's pretty cool.

I thought 2011 was a down year for 'indie games', actually. nothing really grabbed attention like V or Meat Boy. Minecraft is totally 2010 and Bastion is made by ex-EA guys so I don't really think of it as all that indie, even if it is. they were a bit more professional than your typical indie game.

they are getting more mindshare though. that much is obvious and won't stop so long as services like Steam continue to thrive. music had the same thing happen when you didn't need stores to sell your stuff anymore. the Internet is the great equalizer.

Frozen Synapse is the game that really stood out to me this year, personally. Terraria grabbed a lot of attention too (though part of that was because it was riding in on Minecraft's coattails).

Also, I still consider Bastion indie, even though the team that made it is a bit more experienced than the typical indie team. It's still a team of just seven (including the narrator) with a much lower budget than any of the bigger game companies.

There weren't any real strong platforming games, but I feel we got a bunch of games that felt a bit more original in terms of concept or presentation.

Terraria, yeah. it definitely rode Minecraft's coattails but that game hit it big.

Magicka seemed like a big deal for a week and then I never heard about it again. Frozen Synapse sounds cool though I have no experience with it.

the game that stood out to me this year was Isaac. everywhere I went, I heard about it.

has anybody played Waves? I'm interested in it but a.) I was curious if it had gamepad support and b.) if it can run on my computer. it doesn't look taxing but neither does Jamestown and my computer sucks hard on that game! weird how it can play Bastion and Shank no problem but not Jamestown.

magicka has solid support. that game sold a ton, and every time new dlc comes out for it, it crops up on to steam's most played list for a week or two. it's a big indie game, it's just not really talked about in communities you frequent.

haven't tried waves. i want to, but i have so much stuff on my plate.
