I realize your rationale. I'm just saying there's an equally valid rationale to making 1, 2, and 3 a trilogy there.

If you made 3 80s though I'd agree with 2 > 1 > 3.

I'd say it's 2 > 1 > 3 in either case.

I honestly cannot, in good conscience, count 3 as a part of the same series as 1, 2, and 80s. Guess I might just be extremely biased against them.

3 has a different feel with its overchartedness but it's no more different than your SMB2s.

I think the real downfall for GH was jumping over into other instruments. I honestly think that if they hadn't tried to latch onto Rock Band's coattails and just stuck with being a guitar game that the rhythm genre would be a lot stronger right now for both franchises.

there... really aren't that many games i can think of that fit this. mainly because it's rare to get a trilogy within gaming. god of war might fit this i guess, if 3 wasn't as good as 2. no idea.
