Been a terrible week of hockey for me, well the last few days anyway. Blues lost three games, and the Rangers lost the one game that I watched for them. Suck.

First I didn't realize that the Rangers game started so early, then when I realized it was on I couldn't find any stream for it because they seem to be down. So I couldn't watch it, but I saw they were down by two and figured they wouldn't be winning again.

NOW I'M PISSED THAT I DIDN'T GET TO WATCH THE GAME AUGH.

Why what'd they do?

rangers up 3-2 with like 30 seconds left, flyers pull goalie and callahan starts a break

knowing he's about to score the game icing empty netter, a desperate flyer hooks him from behind and the ref sends both guys to the bench

i figured that was just a make up call for them kind of screwing the flyers a few minutes prior by blowing the whistle before the puck was dead, but then they handed them a penalty shot for no reason 10 seconds later

Yeah, the officiating at the end was really questionable. It made for an exciting finish though! Lundqvist too good.

Callahan call was definitely iffy although Callahan didn't help himself as he did try to latch on to the stick

it's a game that's played on january 1st every year (it was moved back to the 2nd this year because the 1st was a sunday and they didn't want to compete with the nfl). they've been playing it for 5 years now. there's no real reason for it, it's just cool to have a game played outside in cool venues like wrigley field and fenway park. the game yesterday was played in the phillie's baseball stadium.

I generally make a point of assuming that teams with games in hand get one point out of each (although statistically the number is higher than 1, especially towards the top of the standings). As such I'd say Ottawa is currently tied for 8th with Winnipeg.

The way the NHL official stats show standings are moronic, no other North American pro sport is so stupid as to not take into account games played in some way. Winning percentage / games behind the leader / etc. systems are much better.
