I booted up Shadow Hearts on an HDTV today. I know it's a fairly ugly PS2 game, but still, wow. some games are just brutal on modern TVs. even good looking games like DQ8 take a while before your eyes adjust and they look presentable.

I wish Sony would just let you rip your PS2 games and play them on Vita instead of making you pay for the ones they get rights to and want to sell. defunct companies like Nautilus or companies that have switched sides like Monolithsoft are not going to put their games on PSN and it sucks. I'd love to play the Shadow Hearts trilogy on a portable.

If Sony don't, the community will.

Assuming Vita has a proper PS2 emulator? I don't recall seeing it confirmed, but then I haven't been paying a huge amount of attention to its features.

It doesn't, unless it's like hidden inside or something.

We'll have to wait and see what the hackers manage to dig up.

Component Cables + proper 4:3 aspect ratio + messing around with the sharpness should help some.

There is no way Vita would be good enough for PS2 emulation.

why wouldn't Vita be good enough to do PS2 emulation? it's way further ahead of PS2 than PSP was from PS1.

given how they started to bring out PS2 games on PSN and how that's the next logical step for Vita, I'd be shocked if they didn't have some kind of support going forward.

though... granted, i also wouldn't expect good PS2 emulation out of it either. PS1 was easier to emulate on low end machines, so the comparison doesn't work so well. i also doubt the Vita is that much better relative to the system anyway - the hardware was pretty weak then and evolved fast thereafter. having more cores doesn't really do a lot of good for the PS2. more RAM can only go so far for mattering. like sure, i'd expect it to be able to pull off a couple PS2 games well, but i'd expect sub 360-Xbox emulation.

Support and Emulation are not the same thing. Most modern PCs struggle emulating PS2 games right now, I don't see the Vita outdoing them.

The PS2's architecture was really complicated, and that's why PC emulation of it is still terrible. I honestly can't see the Vita being able to do it, because I think the Vita's almost completely different in architecture.

damn emotion engine

I can understand how those type of things can make emulation difficult. Sega Saturn emulation is still fairly non-existent

all you'd need to do is include it in the VIta, right?

PS3 can do it no problem, I don't see why Vita can't

Yeah you and me both. For me it's not so much graphics as just being able to play through handhelds a lot easier these days. Like I guarantee you if FFX-2 was a handheld I would've beaten it by now.

I would expect Sony to be more capable of creating an emulator for their systems, but I'm not sure that it would happen anytime soon. Maybe later on. Vita is a very capable machine, though. PS2 games themselves are nothing for Vita to run.

That's the thing, they already have a great PS2 emulator that is entire software-based for PS3. Given the compatibility between PS3 and Vita, I doubt it would be too complicated to port the emulation to the Vita, as long as the Vita can handle it.

But then why would Sony have PS3 emulation on a handheld but not on their main home console? If PS2 emulation wasn't removed from the PS3 for whatever BS reason Sony had, then I would find it likely for the Vita to have the same emulation. Now, not so much.

...uhhh, no, PS2 emulation is honestly pretty much damn near perfect and has been for about a year. they've consistently been improving on it and have allowed more cores to increase performance, but no. it's not a problem for PC.

ditto for Saturn emulation. but that one did take forever, yes. nobody's really even bothered with Xbox, PSP, or Dreamcast. or they're just that much more complicated. not sure which.

but the Vita's a different story. go in expecting something like the Xbox to Xbox emulation - which is a much bigger jump than PS2 to Vita - and you'll probably be only a little disappointed.

PS2 BC was removed from PS3 so they could release those HD collections, and so they could sell more PS2s (which they were making money on). it wasn't like the software BC didn't work - hell, they released some on PSN a month or two ago.

I know there was a fairly good Dreamcast emulator ~5 years back, no idea if it's been worked on since.

PSP just hasn't been worked on as much. Ditto with XBox (if they can get GC working, there's no good reason they can't get Xbox).

not only is GCN working, but Wii is also almost perfect on a lot too. there really isn't much reason in terms of 'are our systems advanced enough', but all a matter of 1) people caring, and 2) how difficult it is. for some reason the Xbox and the 360 both are complicated architectures and the first one's really tough despite the fact that a lot is like a PC. the 360 and PS3 won't be with good emulators anytime in the near future, and it's not the PCs that are the problem. a relatively cheap PC can run circles around either one already. they're both just very different and very complicated machines - if you think the Cell is a pain in the ass for developers imagine how bad it must be to try to create a system that replicates it. all honesty i think we're reaching a point where we can't emulate these systems fast enough or good enough in a semi-reasonable timeframe where one can think 'hey i'll play that one!' for some reason or another (whether it's piracy, legitimate playing because your system died, or the game's been out of print/production) and are hitting a point where we'll be 'oh hey i can play... last gen's games. huh.'
