Yes, the aesthetic direction of the game is not as good as the previous two, and the music aside from rearrangements of previous tracks isn't as good either. Additionally that elephant is lame as s*** compared to Rambi.

But the game has some great boss fights and some of the better gimmick levels in the series.

My biggest problem with DKC3 is that every level is a gimmick. A lot of these are awful.

DKC3 is a fine game in and of itself, but compared to the first two, it comes up short, in my opinion. This is the point in the series where Rare starts going overboard with collectibles and gimmicks.

And then they go full blown crazy with DK64.

What were wrong with the DK64 Kongs. Apart from Chunky, the other two were good enough. I thought Lanky was pretty cool in all honesty =)
And even then, Chunky doesn't reach the lameness that is Kiddy Kong.

DK64 ripped off Banjo way too much.

Which isn't a terrible thing because Banjo is amazing, but it didn't do it nearly as well, and ultimately DK had it's own style that I love that was thrown out, and that is a terrible thing.

DKC3 is all right. I think it's the hardest DKC, it's got a few good levels in it, it's overall solid. The worst part is that the music and overall aesthetic design are really bad compared to DKC2.
