Jim Carrey was once my favorite actor, but I never watched his stand-up.

Penn & Teller had an interesting show ("Bulls***," maybe?) and I think Penn was once the voice for Comedy Central's commercials. Like Carrey though, never watched their stand-up.

I don't know Steve Hughes.

bryans, I was the one who initially made the comment. I was waiting to see if anyone was going to step up, and for additional support. I figured if nobody else intended on doing so, I'd give it a go, but you're more than welcome to as far as I'm concerned.

That's okay, it was your idea so you go ahead and do it.

Christopher Titus and Mitch Hedberg are the only stand up guys I've ever got enough out of to bother to watch/listen to again.

Alright, if you're looking for me to step up, I'll step up. But if we're going to do this, I want some help, since I'm not a comedy expert.

I need clips.

Give me links (preferably YouTube) of comedy routines of these guys, between 2 and 6 minutes long, that best represents them. Although we are looking for the best stand-up comics, I will accept work of their's that is not specifically stand-up as long as we can say it was that particular individual that made the scene work. (Chris Farley in the "van down by the river" sketch comes to mind.) However, unless we're going to expand the field, we are looking for comedians who are known for doing stand-up -- they just don't have to be exclusively a stand-up artist.

Here's the list of comedians that have been put forth so far, along with whatever clips I've been provided. Ideally I'd like at least three for each, but that might be asking for too much.

Since it's almost impossible to seed this, I'm going to put them in the bracket randomly unless somebody else has a better idea. From there it'll be standard voting, but I want to have representation of the folks on here who aren't as well-known so it doesn't just automatically come down to Richard Pryor vs George Carlin, or some such. Unlike a music tournament, I'm not going to force people to listen since we are rating the comedian and not the routine, but I'd like to have it there for people to consider. Under the assumption that people will want to listen to the clips, we'll probably do two matches per day?

We do still have room for nominations. At present, there are 114 comedians that have been named in this thread, and some were mentioned jokingly. I'm going to assume that any comedian I receive three clips from is a serious entry. After a reasonable amount of time, I'll pick from whoever's left.

I'm open to suggestions here if you've got a better idea how to work this. At some point I'll open up a topic more formally for the tournament, but I want to get opinions first, and get the ball rolling.

Eddie Izzard is my favorite, easily. I saw him mentioned earlier in this topic and someone also said they don't like British humor, so they don't dig his stuff. British humor is hit or miss with me, but I love Eddie Izzard. On the other hand I can't stand most Monty Python stuff, and I rare laugh when my friends try to get me to watch The IT Crowd or The Young Ones. I think instead of being "British" Eddie Izzard's humor is more based on linguistics, history, and literature. If one has an interest in any of those, they are more likely to enjoy Eddie's material.

I was going to use the clips as a means of knowing who to include. Am I doin it wrong?

If nothing else, we need enough other comedians to fill the bracket. I can just do some google-fu to pick some dudes, but I'd rather those get filled by personal preferences.
