I know this game's been out for 2 months and I'm late in making this kind of topic, and I apologise if people have already found this out and it's old (well I'm sure someone has, but I mean people on this board), but this game might be my favourite game ever, and I just had the most amazing thing happen to me and I need to share it.

Spoilers for how to join the Dark Brotherhood and its first quest below.

Well I found out passively from overhearing a conversation about this kid Aventus Arentino, and it created a new quest, Innocence Lost, the one where you have to kill the cruel woman who runs the old orphanage he was at before he ran away. I took the mission on, unsure whether I'd actually go through with it (I'm playing a stereotypical goody-goody warrior in this playthrough, not an assassin). But then I got to the Orphanage and she was a *****, and some of the kids were scared for their lives, so I thought whatever and killed her. I probably should've realised that it was the start of the Dark Brotherhood questline since the kid mentions them, but I didn't, so then I got a message from a courier saying "We know what you did" and freaked out. Didn't sleep for ages, but then eventually I forgot about it, fell asleep, and the "With Friends Like These..." quest began, the Dark Brotherhood initiation quest.

For those that haven't done the quest, basically you're locked in an abandoned shack with Astrid, the leader of the DB. She tells you that you did good work killing the woman, but it should've been a DB kill and you need to make up for it by killing someone for the DB. I was like "oh neat, a quest I can ignore", but you then get turned round and find that there are 3 people bound with sacks over their face, one of whom the DB have been contracted to kill. Also, she won't unlock the door "until someone dies". At first I was thinking "crap crap crap", because my character doesn't do this kind of thing! After talking to them a bit though, I realised - Astrid's got the key to get out, and she specifically said "until someone dies", not necessarily one of those three. I knew killing her would cut off the DB questline, but I didn't mind because I fully intend to do that questline with a different character on another playthrough, so whatever. I kill her and find the key to the shack on her, and I'm feeling very clever and very proud of myself when the "Quest failed: With Friends Like These..." message comes up.

Then another message comes up. "Quest Started: Destroy the Dark Brotherhood!" The game knew I was going to kill Astrid, and it's provided an alternate quest for me. This game is genuinely incredible. This has probably been done by so many people and I'm late to the party, but I'm basically marking out right now. I don't know if I'm getting sleep tonight, I think I'm just playing this.

Yeah, that is pretty neat. I remember doing that the first time and being like "Wow, didn't expect that"

My complaint about the Dark Brotherhood quest line in Skyrim is that the kills are not really elaborate like they were in Oblivion.

What do you do in the destroy the brotherhood quest? Just run in there and slice em all up? Or is there a questline for it?

I don't know, to me it's not just a case of "oh there were two routes and one leads one way and one leads the other". One of them the game gives you no indication you can actually do, it just lets you figure out the possibility on your own and rewards you for being inventive with the solution by taking the entire quest on a completely different route. Short of through word of mouth or FAQs or whatever, the vast majority of people who play the game are never going to discover that quest even exists, and that it does just creates this wonderful feeling of absolute control and freedom. It's like, you really can do anything, and the game will accomodate you doing that, and it's such a rewarding experience to have. It's not the best thing ever, but it's my favourite moment so far, no question.

As for what you do, I don't know yet. Guess I'll find out!
