Unfortunately, no one can be told what the Matrix is. You have to see it for yourself.

It's just an analogy.

It's like saying your monitor is only translating data and is not the "true data itself", when the "true data itself" would actually be quite meaningless to your eyes.

Gah

I read that as "It's like saying your mother is only translating data"

That's actually pretty much true though, isn't it? Information is intangible, and IIRC not subject to entropy either.

Well yes, but it's far less mind-boggling when presented as a natural occurrence than a visually dramatic scenario.

Well Plato couldn't really have written about computer monitors now could he?

The idea of translation was around back then.

But that's besides the point, I'm not blaming Plato for anything!
I just don't want people to hear it quickly and then write it off as hocus-pocus, or worse, some stunning revelation.

For a moment I wondered what game you were talking about.

Then I remembered Sophie's World.

I like cave shadows. I used to think I should be trying to break free from my chains and see what lies outside, but the shadows seem to be good enough for everyone else. I just shrugged and decided to roll with it.

Not what I'm talking about. What I'm referring to is the following scenario:

-Locked time loop. You send an object through it.
-Eventually, the object degrades.

But what if you send information through that loop? And that's where theory comes in. There's a theory that postulates that information would survive a locked loop eternally, in some situations.
