Favorite band is Radiohead. Other acts I've been enjoying the most lately include Modest Mouse, Bright Eyes, and Sufjan Stevens.

Ziggy Stardust is the popular choice I'd say deservedly so, a random one I really dig is Outside.

Ziggy Stardust is a pretty good choice. I really dig Hunky Dory and found it really accessible, so that too.

Ziggy Stardust is probably the best place to start.

If you like it then go check out Hunky Dory.

if you like that then you'll probably like all his albums (go check out Low)

What inspired me to finally get a Bowie album is I was just listening to the John Lennon song #9 Dream and thought "this reminds me of Bowie but I don't remember which song." So stuff like that but I'm open to any of it.

well, I actually kind of want to say Heathen after listening to this.

Don't know why!

John Lennon was quoted as saying that when making his album Double Fantasy in 1980, his ambition was to "do something as good as 'Heroes'." It was named NME Album of the Year.

From the "Heroes" wikipedia page

Whoa just checked wikipedia and he has way more albums than I thought. This is sort of daunting...is there a certain time period when he was best, or did he start to suck at a certain point?

70s were his prime, but then again I recommended an album from 1995 too, Bowie likes to surprise you.

he was always the best (except for maybe like, late 90s). It's all worth checking out, but if I needed to narrow the albums down...

Hunky Dory, Ziggy Stardust, Aladdin Sane, Diamond Dogs, Station to Station, Heroes, Low, Heroes, Lodger, Scary Monsters, Heathen, Lets Dance

.... ok maybe I didn't narrow it down that much

Station to Station is his best. There was an excellent remaster that came out two years ago. If you get into him, and want to spend some money on a great package, get it:

You're missing out on a ton of his other great singles and stuff from the other albums, but if I had to try and cut out more than half his albums to create a "check out these albums to fully understand the career of Bowie", that would be what I picked.

Decided to start with Hunky Dory and go forward. I'll probably check out his earlier stuff eventually.

Life on Mars is a great song...I've heard it before but didn't realize how great it was until now.

I clicked this topic to suggest Hunky Dory. Along with Aladdin Sane, Ziggy Stardust, and Diamond Dogs you get the best era of Bowie.
This is kinda weird, but I'd also recommend checking out some collections that have B-sides and Bowie performing songs that he wrote for other acts as well. He has such an expansive body of work that it is really easy to miss some gems like Bombers.
