I got 3 Complete on Steam and am trying to play it on my mac. It looks fun.

Every time I finish a tutorial and try to start a new one, it crashes. The load times are terrible too. Despite this, I completed the tour missions and am now on the first trial, where it tells me to move the army in Altmark to Brandenburg.

This would be easier if I had an army in Altmark. Altmark is under somebody else's control and I can't select their armies. It said I had recruited some sorta something in Altmark but I don't see it nor do I know of a way to find it.

I was kinda hoping to learn how to play first but I suppose that is the most reasonable course of action rather than clicking on stuff expecting it to magically change.

Never had a problem with the tutorial, but Paradox games are notorious for being very buggy on release. EU3 has been out for years though so uh... yeah.

Dunno what to tell you. Hopefully the actual game works. EU3 is a lot of fun, though very different from a typical strategy game. Most people get annoyed with how slow you have to play to avoid pissing off the world. That's what the speed up function is for. =]

Edit:

The real trick to learning EU3 is to realize that you don't need to touch most settings/menus to learn the game. It's easy to get overwhelmed with all sorts of menus and options and sliders but in reality there are only a few things you need to worry about at first. Once you get over that then the game gets easier to learn.

Should have gotten Chronicles! Complete is actually not the complete collection EU3 and expansions, oddly enough. You're missing the Heir to the Throne and Divine Wind expansions.

Not sure about your crashing problems. Maybe HttT and DW would fix it :\/

Tutorials are broken by the expansions. They're fixed by the other expansions (lol).

Read through that instead and play along. (Castille has much better defined goals as well and more stuff to do for a while than England)

I have no idea what you are talking about, mostly because I never played the tutorials. I've seen a few bugs, but that's mostly because of extremely unprobable situations (like a Buddhist Pope declaring a Crusade on himself).

Instead of messing around with the in-game tutorial, try playing while reading this walkthrough/LP: http://lparchive.org/Europa-Universalis-III-Divine-Wind/

Load times will always be kinda bad, though.

EDIT: Beaten, but my link is better.

Not really, this is 100 Years War France up to Napoleonic France, which was actually quite a successful period for them.

The real irony is you can horribly break Italy without horrendous trouble, which was (and continued to be for quite a while) a constant quagmire of fail.

Also, I just remembered since this is the horrendous fail labelling of old EU3, Reputation is a very bad thing. Every time you see reputation, think infamy instead. You'll also need to know the common casus belli (reasons you can go to war without taking a pretty massive hit).

http://www.paradoxian.org/eu3wiki/Casus_belli#In_Nomine

The big ones are:

Anyone you have a land claim on.
Anyone not in your religous group.
Anyone not exactly your religion, but you have the Unam Sanctum national idea. (you still take a pretty notable increase in infamy.

Victoria 2 seemed really complex, but I'm realizing now that the complexity doesn't matter since nothing you do actually affects anything.

Kinda annoyed at it at the moment. Spent a while learning the mechanics, but I can just turn the game on high speed and my country is completely fine. Any attempts to get my people to change jobs seem to fail for reasons beyond me -- the UI says that the promotion rate is massive but no one actually makes the transition.

Guess I should've known better than to play a Paradox game before it has at least 3 expansions.

Hearts of Iron might be complicated, but once you have a basic idea you can actually learn everything really fast. You can automate 90% of the game to start with, and just un-automate one part at a time as you learn how to handle everything.

Though I've never played EU, it does intrigue me...

Yeah, there are some things in Vicky 2 that still need tweaking. Pop promotions and demotions are probably the most important now that they fixed the economy. It's usually not an issue if you're playing as a significant country, but it's unnecessarily annoying to play as a minor country because you simply don't have access to the goods your people want and they throw a god damn fit instead of just coping with the reality of the situation.

No coffee? Well, I guess I can't be a bureaucrat anymore! I'll go work on a farm. But there are no jobs for farmers available? Well now that I'm broke I can't promote, so I'll just join the revolutionary front!

I am starting to maybe sorta get the hang of things. I'm playing as Austria and just managed to rebuff attacks from Norway/Sweden/Denmark. Also doing okay in a war with Burgundy. I'm technically at war with Sicily as well but they are so far away it doesn't matter a whole lot. >_> And, uh, man, war exhaustion is not nearly the pain I expected it to be. That was a pretty intense scuffle with the northern guys, and I've had war taxes up for a while, and I still have 0 exhaustion. Only problem is I have no idea where to go from here. All my neighbors are bros now so I can't just pick on them :\

Yeah... I'm playing Belgium and have worked my way to Great Power status and all of my people seem to be happy. My craftsmen have a 22% promotion chance (or whatever the % actually means) yet no one is switching to a Clerk. No idea why. I have really high prestige so they should be able to buy the goods... bleh.

This is happening too. My first few years I was carefully playing with all the sliders and trying to get things to work out right... then I just gave up and let it run on its own and nothing really changed. I feel like you have very little effect on your actual economy. Kinda sad I got this over EU3. Maybe it'll get better in a few patches.

I think the 22% you're looking at is a sort of weighted chance that when and if they promote they will promote to clerks. Like if you have 22% on clerks and 2% on clergy and 0% on everything else then about 9 out of 10 promotions should be clerks and the rest to the clergy. But your problem is probably that you're pops just aren't promoting to begin with. Or maybe your clerks are promoting to something else at the same time. Maybe relax your taxes on the poor to encourage promotion and then tax the hell out of the middle class to make sure they don't go anywhere. Or not. Sometimes you just can't make the game do what you want it to do and it can be pretty annoying.

And having a ton of cash on hand isn't really that important ion Vicky 2 because you can't really spend it on anything directly. You're either making money and can cover your desired expenses, or you're not.

But yeah I like EU3 better. In part because you have more direct control over the workings of your country and the effects of your decisions are more transparent, and in part because the timeframe of Vicky 2 is dominated by a handful of untouchable superpowers that have their sticky little European fingers in almost every corner of the world and it makes playing a minor country more of a "let's turn this country into a respectable regional power" instead of "let's turn this country into the greatest nation on Earth."

It's more of a social/economic/political game filled with pie charts and revolutions, and EU3 is more of a war game filled with beating the crap out of your neighbors and taking their land.

mostly because it actually makes Scotland a feasible option due to giving you like 13 highlander regiments if england declares war on you. my current game is literally a Scotland colonial power that has most of GB under it's control.
