It's enjoyable at times. I had a fun like week where I played a ton of it. It's not something I personally love. The game definitely has a lot of personality. I haven't played it since they made it free.

The excess gear management really killed my interest. And it's not like I can't enjoy inventory stuff in an FPS; Dust 514's inventory kept me up at night. TF2's inventory is just godawful game design.

Imagine a world where every FPS made after 2001 is Mario is Missing, with the exception of one game that's Super Mario Sunshine. Team Fortress 2 is Super Mario Sunshine; not terrible by today's standards, but not a terribly great game either.
And Mario eventually idles for a shirt and sunglasses.
10/10. It is my second favorite game ever, and very close to being my favorite. I consider it to be the most seamless multiplayer experience ever designed. I have never played anything that plays as awesome as competitive 9v9 TF2.

All of these are false! Hurm, I'd say a 9. It'd get the extra point if I hadn't eventually tired of it. (Though I still do play on occasion, it's in pretty short spurts.)
It's like your describing completely the opposite of TF2.
TF2 is one of the fastest and sleekest multiplayer FPSes ever, and most of the items you can buy aren't even helpful, most of the vanilla weapons remain the best in the game. The only real slam-dunk must-have unlocks in my opinion are Sandvich, Kritzkrieg, Jarate, Dead Ringer, Equalizer, Wrangler, and Gunslinger, most of which can be unlocked via doing a few easy achievements, and even these aren't strict improvements, just very important sidegrades.
I quit TF2 at some point feeling that the mass updates of items and such would be overwhelming, and I wouldn't be able to keep up with the changes.
Now I'm back at the game again and regret quitting and giving away a lot of my hats and items. Sniper Rifle and Scattergun haven't changed much when it comes to kicking ass.
